Position Description:

The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications from theoretical/computational plasma physicists who are committed to the research, mentoring, and teaching missions of our department. The successful applicant will have a productive, visible, and well-funded research program with a research focus that is synergistic with current departmental expertise in theoretical plasma physics with applications to space and astrophysical systems, and in experimental space physics and astrophysics. The position is at the rank of full professor with tenure. The position begins as early as Fall 2024, but a later start date may be accommodated.

This faculty position complements departmental, collegiate, and university investments in facilities and personnel in space physics and astrophysics. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with current faculty members in theoretical plasma physics, experimental space physics and laboratory plasma physics, and space-based astrophysics.  This faculty position is intended to bolster the University of Iowa’s historical strength in theoretical and experimental space physics and plasma physics.  There are also opportunities to contribute to our departmental outreach efforts that include the active Hawk-Eyes on Science and Hawk-Eyes in Space outreach programs.

Education Requirement:

PhD in Physics

Required Qualifications:

An exceptional record of scholarship and external funding in theoretical/computational plasma physics; a nationally recognized productive and innovative research program in the application of kinetic plasma physics to the evolution of space and astrophysical plasmas as well as the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of space plasmas; a demonstrated record of effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level; a record of successful mentorship of graduate students to completion of the PhD degree.

Desirable Qualifications:

Evidence of service and/or leadership in department, university or professional contexts; a record of mentorship of postdoctoral researchers; contributions to science and public policy efforts; a record of science outreach efforts.
