Position Overview

The Architecture Section of the Knowlton School at The Ohio State University (OSU) welcomes applications for a design faculty position at the full professor level, starting autumn 2024. We seek candidates with a developed design-based research record and significant national and international experience completing building projects whose expertise will be a valuable addition to the Knowlton School’s dynamic faculty, fostering a rich culture of design, history and theory, and technology.

Although a prospective candidate has been identified for this opportunity, we welcome candidates to apply if they would like to be considered for this and future opportunities.  

Selected candidates will have the opportunity to teach design studios at both undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as courses and seminars aligned with their research specializations. We seek to attract energetic, intellectually curious, creative colleagues with a clear track record of advanced scholarship and nationally and internationally recognized design production.

As our discipline and profession evolve in response to the shifting paradigms of our era—from planetary and climatic changes to urban reconfigurations and equitable redistribution of resources—the Knowlton School seeks faculty who can contribute to these conversations through creative approaches that reaffirm architecture's unwavering commitment to both social and environmental justice. Potential research and teaching themes may address, but are not limited to:

  • Architecture’s engagement with social and/or environmental challenges
  • The interplay between architecture and urban dynamics
  • Innovations in building materials and adaptive reuse and their impacts on architecture
  • Considerations of economic constraints on the realization of built work

We seek candidates who contribute to or expand on these discussions through their design research and teaching.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Terminal degree in architecture (Master's Degree or PhD)
  • Professional licensure in architecture
  • Clear design research record at the national and international levels supported by disciplinary recognition
  • Strong record of research funding supporting material, technology, and design-based research
  • Substantial record of service that reflects a commitment to the school, university, and profession
  • A commitment to or demonstrated efforts in teaching that reflect Ohio State’s Shared Values

Desired

  • Experience teaching design studios at graduate and undergraduate levels
  • Experience teaching classroom courses at graduate and undergraduate levels

Located in the award-winning Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects-designed building on The Ohio State University’s Columbus Campus, the Knowlton School fosters a singular environment for innovative design research and critical inquiry within its three sections: architecture, landscape architecture, and city and regional planning. As part of the College of Engineering, the Knowlton School enjoys the benefits of a large research institution including collaborative relationships with departments in engineering, design, ecology, history, as well as the Wexner Center for the Arts. The school’s ongoing catalogue of special programs includes the Baumer Visiting Professorship, the LeFevre Emerging Practitioner Fellowship, a lecture series, gallery exhibitions, and the Source Books series. Architecture has approximately 420 students, 19 full-time and 15 auxiliary faculty members.
