Professor, Sound Design

Whether designing sound in SCAD’s cutting-edge studios or recording audio in the field, SCAD sound design students amass technical expertise and refine their artistic style. Under the guidance of Academy Award, Emmy Award, MPSE Golden Reel, and Tony Award winning faculty, students record and design sound for film, television, animation, game, theater, and other disciplines including music composition and production. They also learn important theory, practice, professional aesthetics, and more.
In this position, the successful candidate will instruct students on the role, duties, and practices of the production sound mixer and team, both on the film set and in the field. Topics will include all aspects of production mixing during filming, including but not limited to the on-set sound crew, equipment choices and workflows for the recording, and balancing of the audio on set. You will also conduct thorough, thoughtful, and fair student evaluations; hold regular office hours; participate in department initiatives; and advise on the purchase of new equipment, workflows, and more.
The ideal candidate will have a wealth of industry experience at the highest levels. It is essential to have extensive knowledge and experience using cutting-edge equipment and recording gear including multi-channel recorders, microphones, radio microphones, headsets, and mixing consoles. You must understand workflows and the connectivity between on-set sound and post-production. This includes all aspects of timecode, metadata, sound reports, backups, and more. You must also be respectful, cooperative, self-motivated, and able to work in a fast-paced and collaborative setting.
The successful candidate has experience teaching at the collegiate level and/or extensive professional experience including production mixing, the recording of field sound effects, and use of Pro Tools software.

Minimum Qualifications: 

• An M.F.A. or equivalent and extensive professional experience in sound design, film, and television with an emphasis on sound work, or related fields.
• The ability to teach an introductory course in audio fundamentals, theory of sound and image, and basic Pro Tools skills.

Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
