: 

The African American Studies Department at the University of Houston is hiring a non-tenure track Professor of Practice beginning Fall 2024. Duties include teaching (75%) and administrative (25%). The successful candidate must have college-level teaching experience with a preference for a candidate who has experience teaching Introduction to African American Studies. The successful candidate will also teach an elective course and/or co-teach the internship course. Secondly, the Professor of Practice will serve as Director of Undergraduate Studies, which includes working with faculty and the curriculum committee to develop new and revised courses, ushering paperwork through the curriculum approval process, coordinating course teaching schedules, monitoring enrollment trends, performing the department’s learning assessment as well as other related duties. The typical course load is a 4-4, but two course releases (one per semester) will be granted to fulfill administrative duties.

A doctorate in African American Studies, performance studies, history, literature, women’s and gender studies, drama, art history or related area in African American Studies is preferred. The initial term is 1 year and may be renewable after initial term.

Founded in 1969 as the African American Studies Program, the department now offers a major and minor. It is a growing department, which houses a department chair, three additional tenure-track faculty, several adjuncts, and staff members.

Qualifications

: 

Candidate will have a proven record of teaching excellence, developing courses in African American Studies and experience advising undergraduate students.

MA or PhD in African American Studies or related field preferred
