Description of Work Unit
The Computer Science Department at Colorado State University is a dynamic and rapidly growing department with a strong focus on research, teaching, and service. The department has 20 tenure-track faculty with research programs in artificial intelligence, big data, bioinformatics, computer vision, networks, parallel and distributed computing, algorithms, security, and software engineering. Our faculty are over $15 million strong in active research projects supported by federal agencies including NSF, DHS, DARPA, AFOSR, DOE, and NIH. The department has approximately 1100 undergraduate majors and 190 graduate students in masters and doctoral programs.

Position Summary
The Chair serves as chief administrative officer of the department and is appointed by the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences. The Chair is expected to provide dynamic leadership conducive to excellence in research, instruction, and outreach, leading and implementing the vision and direction to advance the department’s mission. With the aid of appropriate departmental committees, the Chair institutes recommendations for appointments, promotion, contract renewal, tenure, salary increases, and dismissals; hires and provides career development to teaching faculty and staff; manages the departmental budget and the distance education program; and is the liaison between the department and the university administration. The Chair is expected to be an individual of demonstrated scholarship, actively engaged in research, who effectively represents the department to the University and the computer science community at large. In addition, the Chair will take on limited teaching assignments.

Required Job Qualifications
The department Chair should have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in computer science, or related program, and hold the rank of Full Professor at Colorado State University at the time of appointment. The Chair should have a proven record of excellence in computer science research and teaching, leadership potential, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and an appreciation of the role of computer science in a modern university. It is essential that the Chair can communicate effectively with members of administration, department, students, and other members of the university community.
