Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Chair and Professor will provide senior academic and strategic leadership and advance the teaching, research, and service/outreach missions of the Department of Family Science and the University of Maryland School of Public Health. The Chair and Professor will work closely with faculty, students and staff within the Department, School, campus and beyond to oversee and ensure excellence in:
  • Academic programs, curriculum development, and clinic operations;
  • Facilitating and supporting faculty and student pursuit of research grants and projects;
  • Facilitating faculty and student participation in interdisciplinary research programs and service activities;
  • Providing fiscal management and oversight of unit operations.

The Chair and Professor will also leverage and expand Department collaborations and initiatives with academic, research, service, and community partners. Additionally, the Chair and Professor will serve as a member of the School’s senior leadership team and represent the Department to students, faculty, staff, administrators, community partners, the profession, and the general public.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
A doctoral degree in family science, maternal and child health, epidemiology, other public health disciplines, couple and family therapy, social work, demography, psychology, sociology, or human development, as well as substantive and documented expertise in funded research and scholarship in an area(s) relevant to the Department’s mission.
Experience:
Previous leadership and administrative experience are required; academic leadership experience is preferred.

  • A commitment to mentoring and development of faculty, students and staff;
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Candidates must be eligible for appointment as a tenured, Full Professor. Anticipated appointment begins July 1, 2023.
