Job Description

The Department of Political Science at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for Department Chair. Appointment to the position will begin July 1, 2018.

The department is seeking a strong leader who brings relevant academic and administrative experience to the position. The position is open to all research areas in political science. The department chair is expected to provide strong academic and administrative leadership to 19 faculty members and staff, teach two courses a year, and oversee departmental operations that include budgets, scheduling, and engaging in appropriate college level service. The chair will work closely with the Directors of Undergraduate Studies and Graduate Studies to provide teaching support for the department’s 500 undergraduate majors and 60 graduate students. While the position can be from any research area within Political Science, the chair should have familiarity with standards and practices in support of specific degrees offered by the Department which include an undergraduate interdisciplinary International Affairs BA, traditional Political Science BA, MA and PhD degrees, and a thriving Masters of Public Administration (MPA). The chair is also expected to build a strong relationship with college administration to further strengthen the department’s research and teaching agenda. Finally, the chair should be prepared to continue advancing our commitment to increasing the diversity of our department community, research expertise, and curriculum.

About the department: the Department of Political Science is housed in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada, Reno, a Tier One university. The College of Liberal Arts administers more than 20 majors and minors, and is the largest college at the university ( The department administers two undergraduate degree programs in political science and international affairs, and two accelerated BA/MA and BA/MPA degrees for 500 undergraduate majors. There are an additional 120 plus minors in Political Science, Renewable Energy, Asian Studies, and Latin American Studies (all administered by the Department).

The department is home to three graduate programs that confer MA, MPA, and PhD degrees. The department expects to play a significant role in the university’s long-term expansion plans and its movement toward R1 research status.

Required Qualifications

Qualifications for the position include a PhD in political science, public policy, public administration or related field; an established record of research and teaching excellence; and previous administrative experience that would demonstrate the applicant’s capacity to carry out the duties of department chair.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in obtaining and administering external funding awards is preferred. Applicants should have obtained the rank of full professor. Associate professors will be considered if their qualifications are consistent with the rank of full professor in the Department of Political Science at UNR.
