Professor & Chair of Department of Medical Education- College of Medicine

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine seeks an outstanding and dynamic academic leader to serve as its next Chair of the Department of Medical Education for the College of Medicine.

Specific Duties of the Chair of the Department of Medical Education:

  • Serve as the leader/supervisor and primary recruiter of the faculty of the Department of Medical Education and co-recruiter with other Chairs for joint appointments
    • support innovation, development, and delivery of an effective integrated curriculum
    • initiate shared learning objectives and plan an organized sequence of instruction
    • identify and support changes necessary to better integrate the curriculum both horizontally and vertically
    • participate with the academic deans in the Office of Medical Education in a yearly process of internal review of the curriculum to ensure objectives in the educational strategic plan for the College of Medicine are met
    • promote active learning strategies, innovation in teaching, and rigorous assessment strategies
  • Coordinate the operation of the Anatomical Bequest Program (APB) and APB staff (Faculty Director, two Program Administrators), the Gross Anatomy Facility and the Student Locker Room
  • Coordinate the Anatomy and Neuroscience curricula and courses in the Colleges of Dentistry, Health Professions, Graduate Health Sciences, Medicine, and Nursing.
  • In partnership with the Assoc Dean of Med Ed, ensure appropriate succession planning for faculty involvement in medical education
  • Build community among medical educators, promote excellence in teaching, and provide mentoring
  • Serve on the Executive Committee for the Academy of Master Educators as a leadership partner to create more opportunities for the Academy to provide service to the COM
  • Develop the agenda for and hold regular Department of Medical Education faculty meetings
  • Promote a culture of achievement in the mission of medical education
  • Support Med Ed faculty in the promotion and tenure process at UTHSC
  • Provide encouragement, guidance, and oversight of research/scholarly activity of the department
  • Work to ensure mechanisms to enhance faculty members’ career development in the areas of teaching and educational scholarship
  • Assume budgeting and responsibility for all department finances
  • Annually evaluate DOME faculty, determine merit pay, assign faculty tasks, and mutually agree on goals with faculty
  • For faculty who are not primarily appointed in Med Ed, but provide substantial efforts toward medical education, the Chair of Med Ed would provide feedback on that faculty member’s teaching performance to their primary department chair to be used in the annual review process
  • Participate in Chair meetings organized by the Executive Dean’s office and participate in strategic planning within the COM
  • Serve as a member of the Committee on Undergraduate Medical Education (CUME) and other committees as needed
  • Engage in philanthropic efforts to support funding for programming, faculty development and recognition among our faculty educators

  Basic Qualifications: 

Applicants must hold a PhD, MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree. Salary, rank, and tenure consideration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
