Organizational Unit Overview
The mission of the College of Education (COE) is the preparation of professional educators and allied practitioners. Significant to this mission is a strong commitment to three important related areas, all of which are realized through partnerships and other endeavors. These areas are: (1) the encouragement and nurturing of professional growth for educators and allied practitioners at all levels and in all areas of the education endeavor; (2) a continuing emphasis on and support for scholarship and research/creative activity; and (3) service in all areas of professional education. Critical to such commitment is the promotion of effective teaching; staff participation in the improvement of schools; and, in concert with other state agencies, the development and creation of educational policy for North Carolina. ECU has been recognized with the 2024 Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement from the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This reclassification is valid for six years.
Job Duties
The COE at ECU invites applications and nominations for the position of Chairperson of the Department of Interdisciplinary Professions (IDP). Programs offered by IDP include Adult Education, Counselor Education, and Library Science. IDP also offers various undergraduate and graduate certificates. For this full-time 12-month position, we are seeking a dynamic and innovative leader with exemplary leadership, administrative, personnel management, and supervisory skills. The position of Chairperson of the Department of Interdisciplinary Professions (IDP) is expected to have an on-campus presence. Responsibilities include facilitating the development and attainment of departmental goals with a clear vision for the Department’s future aligning with the mission of the college and university at large https://education.ecu.edu/idp/ . Those responsibilities include, but are not limited to: decision-making; negotiating teaching assignments, research, and service loads for faculty; providing leadership in cultivating a culture of care, belonging and opportunity for our faculty, staff, learners and stakeholders; evaluating faculty and staff; providing leadership to the success of established collaborative partnerships and innovative foresight to the establishment of new partnership opportunities; collaborating with faculty within the Department and across the college regarding curricular and related programmatic matters; managing budgets; involvement in the hiring process of faculty and staff; and advocating for the IDP Department in college and university issues/contexts, and sustaining academic teaching, research, excellence following the ECU service model focus “Servire” – To serve the community, and the profession.

Minimum Education/Experience
The candidate must possess a Ph.D. or Ed.D. degree in adult education, counselor education, or library science or a related field. Rank will be Associate or Full Professor with salary commensurate to qualifications. Rank will be commensurate with education and experience. Qualifying degrees must be received from an appropriately accredited institution.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated effectiveness in: (1) teaching and overseeing undergraduate and master’s degree programs in adult education, counselor education, or library science; (2) leading university collaborative efforts with educational and/or clinical settings; (3) securing external grants for research and program development; (4) participating in accreditation processes such as the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), and/or American Library Association (ALA) accreditation processes.
