The Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences (Harriot College, https://thcas.ecu.edu/ ) employs approximately 450 full-time faculty and staff, and the Dean’s Office oversees all budget, personnel and academic matters in its departments, interdisciplinary programs, centers, institutes, and auxiliary offices. Harriot College is home to 16 academic departments and offers more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Job Duties
This is a 12-month faculty position within a Harriot College department with 0.49-1.00 FTE reassigned time to the Office of the Dean.
STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP
The Associate Dean for Research (ADR) will be a collaborative leader who will facilitate and promote research and creative activity endeavors of the scholars in Harriot College in alignment with the university’s mission, especially by securing and leveraging extramural funding. The ADR will report directly to the dean on their performance of duties to support scholarly excellence, including but not limited to:
  • Mentoring and supporting faculty in the development and achievement of research and creative activity goals;
  • Guiding faculty in their pursuit of extramural support for discipline-based, creative, community-engaged, and other forms of scholarship;
  • Fostering engaging, collaborative and interdisciplinary scholarly opportunities for the faculty across Harriot College and ECU;
  • Showcasing the depth and breadth of scholarly achievements in Harriot College to ensure recognition and career advancement goals are enjoyed.

ADMINISTRATIVE AND OPERATIONAL OVERSIGHT
The ADR will ensure an effective research administration infrastructure is achieved and maintained to the benefit of faculty, staff, and students who engage in myriad research and creative activities in Harriot College. The ADR will supervise pre- and post-award research administrative staff, be responsible for their evaluations, and support them in continuous improvement and achieving job success. The ADR will ensure all operations comply with university, state, and other funding agency requirements. Additional duties include facilitating start-up packages and other budgetary and decision-making responsibilities related to facilities and administration, in close collaboration with the Harriot College Associate Deans for Resource Management and for Planning.
OTHER
The ADR will be an important partner to department chairs, ADRs across the university, and other personnel in ECU’s Office of Research, Economic Development, and Engagement; additionally, the ADR will serve as a critical liaison to offices including but not limited to Office for Faculty Excellence and Office for Equity and Diversity. As with all Harriot College leaders, the associate dean will collaborate with college leadership to achieve strategic goals; provide critical insight to the dean in the allocation of resources; participate in college-level searches for faculty and staff; and represent the dean’s office in a professional, ethical, transparent, and supportive manner. Similarly, all associate deans are expected to embrace, support, and promote the vibrant community of emerging and established scholars in the arts and sciences, especially at college, university, and community activities and events.
The remaining duties of the faculty member in their home unit may be teaching, research, and/or service, as informed by candidate expertise and subsequently negotiated by the unit administrator, commensurate with the remaining FTE not reassigned to Associate Dean for Research duties.
Minimum Education/Experience
Ph.D. or terminal degree as appropriate based on the discipline in a field included in or aligned with the liberal arts and sciences, and a successful history of research or creative activity with appropriate publication, recognition and support that would be commensurate with the rank of full professor in a Harriot College department, as reviewed by the appropriate personnel committee.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
None.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • 5 years of prior experience in administrative leadership or in managing large research projects preferred
  • Experience in research proposal writing and management of federal grants encompassing interdisciplinary research teams
  • Experience in mentoring faculty at various stages of scholarly development and developing collaborative projects
