Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU) and the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence (SCAI) seek applicants for multiple tenure-track or tenured faculty positions in the area of “Natural Language Processing.” SCAI, one of the eight Fulton Schools, houses a vibrant computing, AI, and engineering research community (Learn more at   https://research.engineering.asu.edu/ ). We seek applicants who complement our abilities in these areas to solve grand challenges as part of a community of experts. Particular areas of interest of this search include, but are not limited to: Natural Language Processing (NLP); generative AI, formal analysis of emergent behavior of large language models (LLMs) and conditioning in LLMs; innovative training and fine-tuning approaches; addressing LLM challenges such as hallucination, logical reasoning, and mathematical reasoning; combining NLP and information retrieval; continual updating of language models; NLP in multi-modal models; and NLP applications to areas such as scientific discovery, engineering design, education and clinical care.

SCAI currently houses several ASU Centers - including the Center for Assured and Scalable Engineering (CASCADE, https://cascade.asu.edu/ ), the Center for Accelerating Operational Efficiency (CAOE, https://caoe.asu.edu/ ), the Center for Biocomputing, Security and Society (CBSS, https://biodesign.asu.edu/biocomputing-security-and-society ), the Center for Embedded Systems (CES https://ces.asu.edu ), the Center for Secure, Trusted, and Assured Microelectronics (STAM, https://stamcenter.asu.edu ), the Center for Cybersecurity and Trusted Foundations (CTF, https://globalsecurity.asu.edu/cybersecurity-and-trusted-foundations ), and the ASU-Mayo Center for Innovative Imaging (AMCII, https://amcii.asu.edu ) - and have a large number of faculty working on a variety of relevant topics.

We seek applicants who will contribute to our academic programs, promote transdisciplinary teaching and research, and help the university to achieve its aspirations, including enabling student success, transforming society, valuing entrepreneurship and conducting use-inspired research. Faculty members in the Fulton Schools of Engineering are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of graduate and undergraduate courses, advise both undergraduate and graduate student research and projects, and undertake service activities.

This search is part of ASU’s engagement with the Arizona’s New Economy Initiative (NEI) , a bold effort to ensure that Arizona leads the new economy that will rely on engineering, computing and technology to drive sustainable growth, resilience and opportunities for all. NEI investments in the Fulton Schools of Engineering will grow our world class faculty to accelerate research outcomes and to broaden student access to our programs; support Science and Technology Centers to foster the growth of new economy Industries; and expand experiential learning and workforce training opportunities.

Appointment will be at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments, beginning August 2024. Although the tenure home may be in any of the Fulton Schools, the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence is currently the most involved in the interest of this research.
