Professional Writing Specialist

Job Summary

The Professional Writing Specialist will provide one-to-one or small group writing consultations to campus writers, primarily undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. Responsible for using a collaborative, dialogic approach. Consultations will focus on planning, drafting, revising, editing, self-assessing. Facilitate client's understanding of rhetorical, genre, language, and document conventions. Develop, facilitate, promote, and assess writing workshops, whether focused on general audiences, on a variety of common topics, or targeted to specific disciplines or courses.

This will be a hybrid position (50% on campus). 

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Facilitate one-to-one or small group consultations with campus writers (undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty) from across the university. Consultations will focus on planning, drafting, revising, editing, self-assessing. Facilitate the client's understanding of rhetorical, genre, language, and document conventions. Document those experiences and debrief with Writing Lab leadership or peers. Maintain and update learning plans, schedules, and other writing educational materials.
  • Develop, facilitate, promote, and assess writing workshops, whether focused on general audiences on a variety of common topics or targeted to specific disciplines or courses. Work with peers, customers, and leadership in the development of offerings, including identifying and implementing of new program initiatives and providing improvement recommendations for current programming.  
  • Participating in research and other projects. Facilitate communications and foster relationships with campus writers. Other duties as assigned

 

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Writing, Rhetoric & Composition, Curriculum & Instruction, or related fields.
  • Two (2) years of experience mentoring writers in a writing center/student support/learning commons or related experience. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from different viewpoints and backgrounds and teamwork in daily work activity.
  • Experience with major word processing programs.
  • Ability to model improvisational as well as “best practices” around issues that arise when assisting writers.
  • Ability to understand the challenges and issues facing novice and expert writers. 
  • Understanding of rhetorical, genre, language, and document conventions

 

Preferred:

  • Experience with own graduate writing or supporting graduate writers.
