Position Summary
The School of Music at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro invites applications for a professional-track faculty member in Commercial Guitar to start August 1, 2024. We seek artists/teachers with experience working with students from diverse musical, social, and cultural backgrounds. The ideal candidates are highly accomplished and versatile musician-teachers dedicated to access and excellence for all students. They will be skilled and successful teachers of primarily undergraduate students and will fulfill duties and responsibilities commensurate with academic positions at a leading institution. Candidates will teach studio guitar lessons in popular music styles and jazz, and coach popular music ensembles in a variety of styles and genres, depending on the candidate’s expertise. As a member of the School of Music faculty, the Professional Track faculty member will contribute collaboratively to ongoing equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives in the School of Music. This full-time, one-year faculty appointment is renewable and includes benefits. When the North Carolina state legislature approves cost-of-living increases for state employees, professional-track faculty receive the same cost-of-living increases as tenure-track faculty. Professional-track faculty at UNCG can stand for promotion from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer after five years of service and then from Senior lecturer to Principal Lecturer after another five years of service. Each promotion comes with a base salary increase. Professional-Track Faculty can request, at the time of hire, that years of service in comparable appointments at one or more external institutions be recognized as service time at UNCG for purposes of meeting the five-year minimum period for promotion.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master of Music degree or equivalent professional experience, significant performance experience in a variety of genres and musical styles including jazz, experience teaching guitar, and demonstrated experience working with and fostering engagement in diverse populations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Emerging national reputation, ability to teach undergraduates, ability to teach other supporting coursework (i.e., songwriting, popular music arranging, recording techniques) depending on candidate’s expertise and needs of the department.
  • Expertise and experience in entrepreneurship and career development.
