The Early Music Specialist serves as the department's artistic and technical expert in all aspects of the performance of vocal and instrumental music using period instruments and techniques. An important resource for faculty members, they are responsible for the maintenance, storage, and tuning of all historical instruments owned by the department; they also supervise the use of the instruments by students, arrange for repairs as needed; they advise the Department Chair on the purchase and disposition of all historical instruments.

The Early Music Specialist serves as the Artistic and Managing Director of the ensembles that comprise Early Music Princeton, which includes a vocal ensemble, gamba ensemble, and chamber orchestra.  Responsibilities include day-today oversight of the program and the faculty directors; approving the choice of repertory and all concert programming; managing the budget (in consultation with the Director of Administration and Operations); multi-year artistic and financial planning for the ensembles; supervising the audition process and scheduling of rehearsals; working with the production and communications staff for the scheduling, producing, and promoting of concerts; consulting and collaborating with the faculty directors of the Program in Performance in the awarding of lesson subsidies and curriculum requirements for PPP students who participate in EMP.

The Early Music Specialist is also the principal liaison and artistic consultant for faculty directors for curricular and co-curricular performances in which period instruments are needed.  This includes all the choral ensembles, opera productions (MPP 219), chamber music (MPP 213), EMP-pLORk, as well as any masterclasses or guest artists involving historically-informed performance. The Early Music Specialist is also available to support classroom instruction or consult on thesis projects involving early music and instruments.

The Early Music Specialist also liaisons with the Art Museum regarding music installations, instrument collections, audio exhibits, and concerts.


Requirements:  
*MM or DMA in early music performance 
*Experience managing budgets 
*Experience with and knowledge about historical instruments
*Broad knowledge of repertory and scholarship in historical performance 
*Minimum of 5 years directing early music ensembles 
*Excellent communication skills 
*Ability to teach and perform in at least one area of historical performance (strings, winds, or keyboards)

Preferred requirements
*Minimum of 10 years directing early music ensembles
*Keyboard expertise (harpsichord, organ)
*Experience writing and/or editing program copy and notes
