NATURE OF WORK
The Colorado School of Public Health (ColoradoSPH) has an opening for a full-time Professional Research Assistant (PRA) or Senior Professional Research Assistant (Sr.PRA) position within the Department of Epidemiology and the The Lifecourse Epidemiology of Adiposity and Diabetes (LEAD) Center. The LEAD Center is a groundbreaking Research Center that investigates and seeks to understand the developmental origins of health and disease, and the complex interplay of environmental exposures, genetic and epigenetic processes, and critical developmental periods in life and the development of obesity, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, among other diseases.  LEAD scientists aim to understand the causes of disease, and ultimately translate the findings into preventive actions.  
 
The PRA or Sr.PRA Biorepository Operations Manager will manage LEAD Center biospecimen pulls, coordinate staffing, assess biological sample inventories, be responsible for managing a fleet of eleven -80ºC freezers, coordinate freezer maintenance scheduling and purchasing, will assist with purchasing for the LEAD Biorepository and assist the Assistant Director for Data Operations in developing sample retrieval quotes and conducting investigator intake meetings as needed. The main responsibilities include the tracking, storage, retrieval, processing, and distribution of biospecimens and providing reports to LEAD Center investigators and collaborators.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position will report directly to Dr. Anna Bellatorre, Assistant Director for Data Operations for the LEAD Center.
 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position will mentor PRAs and student workers conducting and planning biorepository pulls.
 
DOES THIS POSITION HAVE FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY?
Will assist with purchasing for the LEAD Biorepository, will not have direct fiscal responsibility.
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

  • Ensure study information is stored and used in a HIPAA compliant manner.

  • Maintain a large inventory of biological specimens, which includes tracking specimen amounts and locations using an electronic inventory database (currently FreezerPro), ensuring the fidelity of the electronic specimen database, creating periodic inventory reports and providing lists of sample locations upon request.

  • Coordinate, document, and monitor specimen requests using an electronic tracking system.

  • Basic financial processing for biorepository purchases and reports.

  • Perform sample retrieval, preparation, and return. Note that this task requires the ability to perform fine motor movements to pipette liquid from one container to another.

  • Write and review procedures for activities involving LEAD biospecimens. Examples include developing procedures for periodic spot storage verifications, refining the specimen retrieval and return process or discussing improvements to the electronic inventory database.

  • Assist in off-hours freezer emergency on an as needed basis that may occur on evenings or weekends.

  • Coordinate training and workflow of personnel to complete the work and provide updates to senior personnel regarding the status of requests.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to perform fine motor movements to pipette liquid from one container to another.

  • Experience maintaining a specimen inventory using electronic inventory databases, such as FreezerPro.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of technical and professional personnel.

  • Excellent computer skills, including advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, and Access, organizational skills, and attention to detail.

  • Knowledge of IATA regulations for shipping biohazardous materials, Universal Precautions, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and FDA regulations relative to specimen collection, basic medical terminology, and phlebotomy.

Salary and Benefits
The salary ranges for this position have been established at $45,000 – $57,000 for a PRA and $58,000 – $70,000 for a Sr. PRA.
 
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, rank, internal equity, experience, education, and area of expertise. The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications for PRA

  • Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in a laboratory science or other related field
  • 3 years of experience in a laboratory or clinical setting or equivalent research setting processing and storing biological samples (e.g.-serum, plasma, DNA, RNA, urine, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications for Sr. PRA

  • Master’s degree with a concentration in a laboratory science or other related field
  • 3+ years of experience in a laboratory or clinical setting or equivalent research setting processing and storing biological samples (e.g.-serum, plasma, DNA, RNA, urine, etc.).

Conditions of Employment:

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

  • 5+ years working in a clinical or research laboratory processing and storing biological samples (e.g.-serum, plasma, DNA, RNA, urine, etc.).
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of IATA regulations for shipping biohazardous materials, Universal Precautions, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and FDA regulations relative to specimen collection, basic medical terminology, and phlebotomy.
  • Experience aliquoting DNA
  • Experience with SAS including basic data cleaning and import/export features
  • Experience with less common biological samples like hair, saliva, placental tissue, umbilical cord blood, or natal teeth.
  • Prior managerial experience
  • Experience maintaining a biospecimen inventory using electronic inventory databases, such as FreezerPro.
