Professional Research Assistant

The Department of Orthopedics has an immediate opening for a full-time Professional Research Assistant (PRA) to work at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO.

This position encompasses research in the Department of Orthopedics. Responsibilities will include the execution of projects aimed at understanding musculoskeletal biology in homeostasis and disease, colonies of rats and mice, application of state-of-the-art imaging, genetics and molecular and mechanical methods to study bone, cartilage and other tissues of the skeletal system.  The candidate will be supervised by Dr. Vanessa Sherk.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Mouse husbandry, management of mouse breeding/weaning, genotyping using tail snips,orthopedic surgeries, i.p injections
  • Skeletal imaging using live mice and bone specimens, harvest of musculoskeletal tissues,serum collection.
  • Molecular analyses of mouse tissues flowing isolation of DNA.RNA and/or protein usingPCR, qPCR, Westerns and immunohistochemistry.
  • Generating plastic/paraffin/cryo sections of mouse musculoskeletal tissues.
  • Culture of primary cells and established cell lines.
  • Assessment of bone material and mechanical properties



Salary and Benefits:


The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at $37,500 to $52,000.


The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.


The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 24 months experience with mouse handling and colony management, cell culture and protein and RNA analyses
  • Experience performing surgical and sample collection methods in live mice, includingskeletal fracture, gavage, blood sampling, tail vein and ip injection
  • Experience performing tissue harvest from euthanized research animals
  • Master’s degree in a related field

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Knowledge on performing survival surgeries on rodents.
  • Understanding of basic skeletal biology
  • Ability to work independently and as part of team
  • Good organization and documentation skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills in both Mac and PC environments and use of standard programs such asWord and Excel
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and handle biological specimens
