Nature of Work

The Department of Medicine in the Bone Marrow Transplantation and Hematological Malignancies Program at the University of Colorado is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join a research lab focused on the study of blood cancer. Principal responsibilities of the position will be to be to perform key laboratory support and management tasks, manage experimental animal colonies and support the scientific program of the lab by assisting with and/or independently conducting experiments under the supervision of the PI and other laboratory staff. 

Professional Field:  Medicine, Hematology Immunology and Microbiology, Genomics/Genetics, Stem Cell biology

Supervision Received:  This position will report to Dr. Craig Jordan.

Supervision Exercised:  The candidate may be called upon to train students, fellows, and other laboratory members.

Examples of Work Performed

 (1) Techniques in experimental hematology and molecular biology; in vivo murine modeling; extraction and processing of organs, isolation of rare blood and blood progenitor cells from bone marrow using magnetic bead separation and flow cytometry; in vitro functional assays on blood progenitor cells; maintenance of cell cultures; primer design and DNA/RNA manipulation; quantitative PCR; molecular cloning; high throughput DNA sequencing; gene expression studies, including RNAseq; and RNAi technology.  (Estimated effort: 70%)

(2) Manage daily laboratory operations, including but not limited to ordering, inventory, cleaning, and preparation of laboratory reagents and husbandry/maintenance of mouse colonies. Maintain laboratory records. (Estimated effort: 25%)

(3) Train students and other staff as needed, attend and present in laboratory meetings and journal clubs (Estimated effort: 5%)
 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Skills and experience in molecular biology, immunology, genetics/genomics, and/or cancer biology. Proficiency in multitasking, including managing multiple projects and laboratory duties concurrently is required. Attention to detail and strong written communication skills are required, and candidate must have excellent organizational and record-keeping skills. Computer proficiency to perform data analysis (e.g. MS Excel, Prism, FlowJo), design presentations (e.g. MS PowerPoint) and conduct word processing (e.g. MS Word) is important.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established at $37,500 - $52,000. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. 

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in a biological sciences or related field.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

 

A minimum of 1 year of laboratory experience in biological sciences (preferable with molecular biology training). Flow cytometry experience is very helpful. The candidate must be must be technically adept, highly organized, and able to maintain meticulous records of experiments, animal colonies and laboratory orders; and be able to work independently with a high degree of professionalism, sound judgment and communication skills. Must be able to work effectively in team settings. Computer proficiency is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience and willingness to work with animal models, flow cytometry sorting/analysis experience is also preferred. Working knowledge of FlowJo, Microsoft Office, Prism, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator is preferable.
