The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.


Position Summary

Columbia Engineering is looking for a team player and self-starter to join our Engineering Student Affairs team as the Professional Development and Student Affairs Officer. The Officer administers, implements, and manages aspects of graduate student’s co-curricular learning, including our flagship Professional Development & Leadership (PDL) program and Graduate Student Affairs aspects, including academic affairs, student life, and student conduct. The Officer is also part of the on-call team.

This is a terrific opportunity for someone who is interested in the intersection of career/professional development and student affairs for a diverse and talented population of graduate students. The Officer is part of a dedicated team of Engineering Student Affairs professionals who run a full service operation to support the success of Columbia Engineering students (high school, undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate, and more!)


Responsibilities

  • (40%) Professional Development and Leadership – With PDL team execute 250+ professional development workshops per year, including facilitating in-person, virtual, and hybrid workshop delivery; recruiting, on-boarding, and supporting instructors (adjunct faculty, Columbia staff, industry partners, alumni, and other subject matter experts) to deliver content to students; manage and set up technologies and course administration application to track student progress, host videos/tutorials, communication and assignments; advertise, market and communicate the offerings of PDL to students, prospective students and other constituents including marketing office and student group events; manage and analyze the attendance and evaluation data collected from the course; oversee and manage student database and related data; obtain and manage resources (rooms, materials); host open office hours for all student inquiries including addressing and advising student inquiries in a timely manner, escalate urgent issues to Assistant Director.

  • (25%) Graduate Student Affairs and Graduate Student Life – Serve as an initial point of contact for graduate student questions or concerns; create and maintain up-to-date documentation of GSA policies and procedures; assists in the coordination of signature graduate student events to provide vibrant student life (i.e. Welcome Day, Welcome Month, Graduate Engineers Connect, Engineering your PhD, Class Day, etc.); advise and support engineering student groups; assist with student conduct cases including educating students about academic, community standards, and related processes; support Associate Director of GSA in management of cases.

  • (20%) Graduate Career Placement – Cultivate new relationships and maintain existing relationships with employers to facilitate the hiring of students, striving for 100% placement of our MS population; collect and analyze accurate placement statistics; generate reports of related statistics; conduct industry outreach and create marketing materials for social media outlets; manage various student/employer/advisor facing systems that facilitate placement and career development, including the Columbia Engineering Career Connect system; source, post/advertise employment opportunities (full-time and internships); provide individual counseling to assist students in achieving career and placement goals.

  • (10%) On-Call and Crisis Management - Serves as part of the on-call rotation to assist in crises situations involving graduate students, and support the management of student crises.

  • (5%) Performs other tasks, duties, and responsibilities as required.


Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor degree is required; graduate level work is preferred. Minimum of 2 years of related experience required.

  • Understand student and academic affairs opportunities and challenges affecting the constituents, consisting of a diverse population - domestic and international.

  • Strong technical competency is required; demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of student services database software and on-line resources, and the willingness and enthusiasm to respond to the needs of students in an increasingly technologically dynamic society. Proficiency with Google suite of products, MS office (Excel with pivot tables, vlookup), PowerPoint, publishing software, social media, etc.

  • Ability to analyze and work with a large volume of student, course and other types data.

  • Must be willing to work on occasional evenings and weekends, on a needed basis, especially when on-call and student crises arise.

  • Possess excellent interpersonal and administrative skills. Ability to work independently and under pressure, with high level of attention to detail. Candidate must exercise good judgment and flexibility.

  • Must be able to prioritize multiple tasks with minimal supervision. Must be able to communicate effectively and tactfully with staff, faculty, students, employers, and alumni in small and large group settings.
