What we want

The Professional Counselor III, under general supervision, is responsible for providing embedded multiculturally competent clinical mental health counseling and outreach to individuals, couples, and groups. Provides training seminars and professional expertise. May supervise assigned staff. Assists in the coordination of counseling services, programs, and the development of new programs. This position will office remotely from the Harrington building in the School of Education and Human Development on the Texas A&M University (TAMU) campus while reporting administratively to the home office of Counseling & Psychological Services in the Student Services Building (SSB). This position will be supervised by a licensed clinician while partnering closely with administration in the School of Education and Human Development to serve the needs of the student population through the Byrne Student Success Center. The Professional Counselor III will meet weekly with their CAPS team, attend staff meetings at CAPS, and attend case consultations with fellow clinicians. A portion of the role may include teaching mental health topics in large classroom settings and developing close consultation partnerships with faculty and staff in the School of Education and Human Development.

Salary: $72,600, commensurate with experience

Work Schedule: This position may require occasional evening or weekend work pending student crises and need.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance, Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, other specialty related to job function

  • Five years post-licensure clinical mental health experience in college counseling center or other relevant setting

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Must maintain licensure for continued employment

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of clinical competency in multicultural counseling

  • Ability to assess for crisis stabilization concerns and hospitalize when appropriate

  • Ability to work autonomously from a remote office while maintaining close relationships between CAPS and the partner administrative team

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Experience:

  • Prefer clinical mental health experience treating depression, anxiety, trauma, and other college-aged concerns through a private practice office setting, a satellite office setting, and/or a college counseling center

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Supervisor status with the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to provide bilingual clinical counseling services

Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Mental Health Counseling (Direct Service) - Provides mental health counseling as well as crisis intervention to individuals, couples, and groups. Provides consultation to faculty, staff, students, and parents. May provide weekly supervision/training including review of recorded sessions and case review for provisionally licensed interns and/or practica students. May provide adjunct supervision for masters and doctoral degree graduate students in counseling. Provides outreach presentations for students, faculty, and staff members about counseling services, programs, professional development topics, issues, etc.

  • Clinical Administrative Duties - Meets ethical obligations for timely documentation of counseling services per State of Texas licensure requirements and Counseling & Psychological Services policies. Engages in counseling related activities including administering and interpreting psychological tests/inventories, making referrals, and managing various organizational and administrative aspects of counseling cases. Assists in the coordination of counseling services and programs, development of new programs, and organizational and administrative tasks.

  • Consultation, Training, and Professional Development - Seeks consultation from peers and leadership for difficult clinical cases per State of Texas licensure requirements. Per state licensure requirements, participates in continuing education and professional development activities related to the performance of job functions and maintenance of skills in one’s professional specialty area. Serves on departmental committees and meetings, division and university committees, and other university functions. Provides professional presentations at local, regional, and national conferences and workshops. Provides training seminars for early career professionals. Performs other duties as assigned.
