What we want

The Professional Counselor II, under general supervision, provides multi-culturally competent mental health crisis stabilization and referral. May provide adjunct supervision for graduate students in counseling, counseling psychology, and graduate assistants. This position will focus primarily on crisis management services including tracking high-risk students, attending to walk-in crisis appointment needs, and providing needs-based assessment with a clinical interview for students discharged from mental health hospitals. This position will partner closely with the CAPS case manager, Suicide Awareness & Prevention Office, HelpLine, and key campus partners such as University Police Department and Student Assistance Services. This position will focus on short-term stabilization counseling and may refer for ongoing counseling and care to CAPS counselors, IOP groups in the community, or community counseling.

What you need to know

Other Requirements or Factors - This position will routinely work during regular business hours M-F between 8-5 pm. However, student need may require this position to work evening hours and/or some weekend hours.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance, Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or other specialty related to job function

  • LPC’s must have completed at least 3000 clock hours of post-licensure clinical mental health experience in no less than 18 months of supervision

  • LMFT’s must have completed 3000 clock hours of full-time post-licensure clinical experience in no less than 24 months with 200 hours of supervision

  • LCSW’s must have completed at least 3000 hours, one year of supervised clinical experience with 100 hours of supervision and passed the ASWB

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Must maintain licensure for continued employment

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Clinical competency in multicultural counseling

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

  • Ability to adhere to the Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct for the relevant Texas State Licensing Board and all relevant laws of the state of Texas

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with crisis management in higher education or behavioral health hospital setting

  • Experience providing case management and tracking for high-risk clients

  • Experience providing stabilization and crisis counseling

  • Experience working with community referrals and hospital discharge processes

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to provide bilingual clinical counseling

Responsibilities:

  • Case Management and Crisis Counseling - Provides mental health counseling, specifically crisis intervention and tracking for individuals. Engages in counseling related activities including administering and interpreting psychological tests/inventories, making referrals, tracking high-risk clients, and managing various organizational and administrative aspects of high-risk counseling cases.

  • Supervision & Consultation - Provides consultation to community partners, faculty, staff, students, and parents. Provides CAMS consultations/CAMS assessment coordination. Seeks consultation from peers and leadership for difficult clinical cases per State of Texas licensure requirements. May provide weekly supervision/training including review of recorded sessions and case review for provisionally licensed interns and/or practica students. May provide adjunct supervision for masters and doctoral degree graduate students in counseling, counseling psychology, and graduate assistants.

  • Administrative Tasks - Meets ethical obligations for timely documentation of counseling services per State of Texas licensure requirements and Counseling & Psychological Services policies. Per state licensure requirements, participates in continuing education and professional development activities related to the performance of job functions and maintenance of skills in one’s professional specialty area. Serves on departmental committees and meetings, division and university committees, and other university functions including the Behavior Intervention Team. Works in partnership with Student Assistance Services for high-risk clients. Assists with organizational and administrative tasks, as requested.

  • Outreach & Presentations - Provides outreach presentations for students, faculty, and staff members about case management and crisis stabilization training. Provides professional presentations at local, regional, and national conferences and workshops. Performs other duties as assigned.
