Unit Position Summary

Research Assistants will work closely with Dr. Elizabeth Perry and a team of personnel on projects related to park and protected area use, relevance, and management. In particular, these hires will primarily focus on data collections at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for the duration of summer 2024, with ancillary duties across other projects and aspects of the research process. This will entail working within a team and solo to conduct visitor intercept surveys, maintaining adherence to the research process and protocols. Survey locations will be throughout the park, requiring Research Assistants to be outside full-time and requesting participation from visitors participating in a variety of activities (e.g., scenic driving, river paddling, hiking, beachcombing) and across a variety of weather conditions. 


Desired Qualifications

Well qualified applicants will have

  • a detailed knowledge of visitor use management principles, practices, and strategies through coursework and/or experience;
  • experience with and enthusiasm for visitor use intercept surveys with the public;
  • flexibility with travel planning and long-duration traveling within the state of Michigan; and
  • professionalism interacting with park and protected area managers, visitors, scientists, local communities, and other stakeholders.
