Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.


Unit Position Summary

In partnership with the United Dairy Industry of Michigan (UDIM), this full-time position will contribute to the mission of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics by providing performance nutrition services to Michigan State University students-athletes and sports teams. This fellowship will prepare an entry-level Registered Dietitian (RD) for advanced sports nutrition practice through an immersive sports nutrition experience including mentored sports performance education and dedicated sport assignments/responsibilities. Sponsored by the UDIM, this fellowship will incorporate scientifically supported nutrition information to promote dairy as part of a healthy diet through educational programs, cooking demos, dining hall and grocery store tours, as well as social media messaging. This individual will report to the Director of Performance Nutrition.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage education, counseling, and fueling plans for assigned Olympic sports teams including, but not limited to the following:
    • Dietary/nutrition consultations/assessments/screenings
    • Development and facilitation of team nutrition education sessions for student-athletes and staff
    • Individual and team meal plan development
    • Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) on nutrition-related conditions such as nutrient deficiencies, food allergies/sensitivities/intolerances, GI complications, injury and/or surgical rehabilitation, etc.
    • Perform and interpret results of nutrition, hydration, and body composition assessments
    • Research, evaluation, education, recommendation, and provision of permissible dietary supplements, as needed/appropriate
    • Grocery store tours and cooking demos
  • Document performance nutrition interventions and metrics, as appropriate
  • Develop education material and programming in collaboration with Performance Nutrition and Milk Means More staff
  • Assist Olympic Sports Performance Dietitian with day-to-day fueling station operations
  • Aid with recruitment, training, education, mentorship, management, and scheduling of dietetic interns and student volunteers, as assigned
  • Serve as a nutrition resource for athletic trainers, coaches, strength and conditioning staff, physicians, and team personnel
  • Complete a capstone project that incorporates an evaluation of student-athlete knowledge regarding sustainable dairy farming practices and the role of dairy products for sports performance and health
  • Contribute to sports nutrition social media and campaign efforts for both Milk Means More and MSU Athletics Performance Nutrition (Spartans Fuel)
  • Additional duties as assigned by Performance Nutrition staff and/or Director of Performance Nutrition
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures as defined by the NCAA, Big Ten, Michigan State University, and Michigan State University Department of Athletics

Desired Qualifications

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition/Dietetics. Must be a registered dietitian (RD/RDN) accredited through the Commission on Dietic Registration (CDR). Desire to work toward the Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) credential. Strong written and oral communication skills. Proven ethical behavior. Must be willing to work non-tradition hours and weekends, as needed. Excellent time management, communication, organizational, and customer service skills. Ability to work both independently and amongst the Performance Nutrition team. Ability to manage student volunteers/interns. Proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.

Desired: Previous experience in a sports nutrition setting
