Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.


Unit Position Summary

The diagnostic responder manager will work with members of the AABI Consumer Horticulture Team to provide support for education and outreach related to integrated pest management. The applicant will work with the consumer horticulture work team to plan 1-2 annual training sessions on integrated pest management. This will include site and speaker reservations, marketing the program, handling events registration, and organizing materials for these trainings.

The diagnostic responder manager will support the oversight of existing Extension Master Gardener diagnostic responders, who are volunteers trained to assist Michigan residents with lawn and garden concerns. The candidate's tasks will include refining the list of current, recorded trainings and ensuring that volunteers are up-to-date on their educational requirements. The candidate will use MSU technology platforms to curate and upload online recordings and trainings for the diagnostic responders. Other responsibilities will include communicating with diagnostic responders about their training needs and requirements.

The diagnostic responder manager will help ensure that Smart Gardening initiatives function smoothly through overseeing training lists, managing the distribution of recognition materials, and monitoring inventory of tip sheets and other printed educational materials that are split across several County Extension offices. This would include participation in annual assessments and meetings to prioritize Smart Gardening Initiatives for the calendar year. 

The candidate for this position could be based in the Ingham County or Macomb County Extension offices. Remote work is a possibility, but some of the job requirements will require being in-person and occasional local travel within Michigan.

This position is subject to renewal through August 2024.


Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in project management and coordinating events, especially of tasks accomplished remotely
  • Familiarity with gardening, plants, insects, or the concept of Integrated Pest Management
  • Reliable internet connection
  • Comfort solving problems as part of a team or independently
  • Ability to work with or learn how to use online platforms such as D2L, Zoom, and Kaltura Mediaspace
  • Good knowledge of MS Excel and other applications for record keeping.
  • Reliable transportation
  • Willingness to travel within two hours 2-4 times a year for trainings or outreach events.
  • Proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other differences to assist with program development and outreach.
  • Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.
