Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.


Unit Position Summary

MSU Extension Tollgate Farm seeks candidates to join our summer day camp team. During the summer, MSU Tollgate Farm offers summer enrichment programming that includes educational day camps for young people ages 4 - 19. As part of the educational staff, the summer communications coordinator will aid in the learning experience for groups of youth ages 4-12 during 8 weeks of science themed camp promoting MSU Tollgate’s mission.

This position is responsible for maintaining the channels of communication between parents, campers, and staff, which includes photo journaling and blogging daily camp happenings and youth development information. This is a 10-week position with two weeks of training prior to camp.

Duties:

  • Update and manage photo journal blog with pictures, videos, recipes, and description of daily program activities
  • Manage and oversee summer social media campaigns (Blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.)
  • Work with the aftercare leader to oversee sign-out of campers and collect drop in payment
  • Set goals and evaluate the effectiveness of communication campaigns through formal surveys, benchmarking, and analytical data
  • Compose an end of program slideshow to be shared with staff and stewards
  • Write and deliver press releases to local media outlets (print, television, radio)
  • Seek additional opportunities to promote and publicize programs
  • Photograph campers and camp activities in compliance with MSU policies
  • Work in close proximity with wildlife and farm animals as part of camp program

Desired Qualifications
  • Have enthusiasm for working with young people in informal settings (school, nature center, summer camp, scouts, etc.)
  • Work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
  • Demonstrate excellent writing skills (experience with blog writing preferred)
  • Knowledge/experience with social networking to promote program information
  • Have interest and excitement for capturing information through photography
  • Work willingly in all weather (including summer heat and/or rain)
  • Be physically active for an 8-hour day
  • Be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Demonstrate commitment, reliability, punctuality, and responsible behavior at previous jobs
  • Possess current CPR/First Aid Certification OR commitment to participate in a training before the first day of camp
  • English/Communications/Journalism majors preferred
  • Proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities, and other differences to assist with program development and outreach.
  • Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.
