Job Summary

The Production Manager is a fully competent and productive professional contributor who works with the Department of Theatre Chair and other professional staff and faculty in overseeing all theatre operations and the production of four main stage Department of Theatre productions, two Division of Dance concerts, and a variety of smaller workshop and outside event projects throughout the academic year in two performance spaces in the Yue-Kong Pao Hall for the Performing Arts.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides functional oversight, mentors, and trains graduate assistants responsible for the sound and lighting systems in the Nancy T. Hansen and Carole and Gordon Mallett Theatres
  • Coordinate all efforts of the grad students and provide continuous feedback to each student
  • Supervise, mentor, train and oversee all undergraduate stage managers working on main stage, workshop, and dance productions. This includes assigning and directing Stage Managers and Assistant Stage Managers and coordinating with THTR 16400 instructors to assign Production Assistants each semester
  • Troubleshoot lighting, sound, and program monitoring systems in the Hansen and Mallett Theatres
  • Implements minor changes to improve effectiveness
  • Administer all space and equipment needs for workshop productions and outside events as approved by the Production Manager and Chair of the Department of Theatre and serve as primary overseer of these projects and events
  • Schedule spaces, develop annual production calendar, oversee production meetings, develop annual budgets, and coordinate production needs with instructional outcomes for each main stage production.

 

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in theatre management or technology (production management, stage management, design and production, technical direction, etc.) or related field
  • Two years of experience in professional live entertainment (i.e., regional theatre, cruise lines, etc.) 
  • Project management; budgeting/costing; calendaring, scheduling, and labor management; ability to install and maintain high end sound and lighting systems; ability to supervise and mentor multiple people at a time.

 

Preferred

  • At least two years of leadership or supervisory work and with high-end lighting and sound system installation, maintenance, and/or troubleshooting

About the Department

The Department of Theatre is one of five academic units (with Art & Design, Dance, Film/Video, and Music) in the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. With 130 undergraduate theatre students (majors/concentrations/minors), 17 graduate students, 10 faculty, and 5 staff, the Department of Theatre is a vibrant community of scholars and practitioners dedicated to transforming theatrical training based on scholarship, research, and creative activity.
