Position Description

The Berkman Klein Center (BKC) at Harvard University’s Institute for Rebooting Social Media (RSM) is a three-year, “pop-up” research initiative to accelerate progress on social media’s most urgent problems, including misinformation, privacy breaches, harassment, and content governance. By convening participants across industry, government, civil society, and academia in timebound collaboration, the Institute aims to improve the state of digital social spaces through multi-model output.

The Applied Social Media Lab (ASML), established within RSM, is hiring practitioners from industry to develop products, tools, and protocols for existing and new social media platforms. Teams of technologists will work in thematic ‘pods’, generating and driving new ideas, projects, and experiments around themes like Trust and Safety Tooling, Political Deliberation, Disinformation Mitigation and more. The lab’s output will range from white papers to fully-functional product prototypes.

The Product Manager will bring both technical and management experience and expertise to the Applied Social Media Lab. This individual will “own” one of the Lab’s thematic pods, managing 3–4 engineers and overseeing the technical workflows of those engineers. A Product Manager will contribute their own technical insights to a pod, and will also work with senior ASML management and external stakeholders (e.g., the owners of open-source projects) to ensure that a pod’s technical goals and realized outputs are aligned with ASML’s broader vision of creating tech that centers the public interest.

As a Product Manager, you will:

  • Lead and coordinate a project team’s overall performance, scope, cost, and deliverables.
  • Manage a team of 3-4 engineers with a range of experience, backgrounds, and specialties.
  • Distill product needs, prioritize features, align stakeholders, manage feedback, and ship compelling user experiences.
  • Drive the entire lifecycle of multiple projects or features at once.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of seven years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who have:

  • Product Management experience at an agency, company, academic institution, or government.
  • Experience leading, motivating, and coordinating cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Strong project management skills including planning and directing teams, strong communication and collaboration skills, ability to multi-task and keep projects on track.
  • Demonstrated ability to work up and down the product stack from spot-checking deliverables to presenting to executives.
  • Excitement to drive on products and projects in the public interest.
  • Ability to exercise sound and effective judgment in complex decision making
