Postdoctoral Researcher

Appointment Type:
Post Doc/Trainee

Job Description:
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The postdoctoral researcher will participate in the development of a framework for identifying and replacing microbial enzymes crucial to robust bioproduction in industrial conditions, using E. coli as a model organism. This project is funded by the Department of Energy’s Biological and Environmental Research program for Systems Biology of Bioenergy-Relevant Microbes to Enable Production of Next-Generation Biofuels and Bioproducts (DE-FOA-0002448). The researcher will be co-advised by Laura Jarboe, Cargill Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Robert Jernigan, Charles F Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology. The project is a collaboration with Peter St. John, of the Biosciences Center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and is administered by Iowa State University’s Bio economy Institute.

The researcher will develop phylogenetic trees for focal enzymes to guide the project, perform both computational and experimental assessment of enzyme stability and activity under extreme conditions, perform gene replacements, and characterize microbial growth and bio-production. Successful implementation of this project will be broadly applicable to industrial-scale bioproduction of fuels and chemicals. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to work productively and respectfully as part of a diverse and multi-disciplinary team, and to clearly and professionally communicate results in both written and oral format. Specific responsibilities include experimental design, execution and troubleshooting; rigorous data analysis; review of relevant scientific literature; ensurance of adherence to safe laboratory procedures; supervision of graduate and undergraduate researchers; preparation of manuscripts and presentations; assisting the PIs in the preparation of technical reports and intellectual disclosures. This project is housed within Iowa State University’s Bio economy Institute and will performed in shared research space within the Bio renewables Research Laboratory and in the Molecular Biology Building.
