Based at NC State’s Centennial Campus, NWI is the world’s pre-eminent research institute for the nonwovens industry, with a service offering focused on: (1) educating future leaders, (2) training programs for industry, (3) pilot and lab services to enable innovation, (4) product innovation by challenging the state-of-the-art, and (5) product incubation production to help grow new products.
Essential Job Duties
The Process Technician position is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic industry and support the operation of NWI’s Spunbond and Meltblown Nonwovens Labs. This position will be responsible for safely operating and maintaining industrial extrusion production equipment on a pilot scale. While this position does require strong technical skills, prior experience in nonwovens production is not required. High-energy candidates can learn this position with full support while on the job.
Responsibilities for this position include:
  • Manage Safety: Maintain a safe lab environment for employees and clients. Ensure lab employees are safety trained.
  • Keep Equipment Ready: Ensure lab machinery is kept in good and safe working order.
  • Maintaining GMP & ISO Compliance: Complete GMP & ISO standards work items on time.
  • Conduct Lab Studies: Support experimental trials for students, faculty & industry clients that utilize pilot nonwoven process systems. Work to understand client needs and to meet them.
  • Produce Material for Incubation Projects: Working with a process team, produce material according to supply agreements with industry meeting all documentation, and product and quality requirements.
  • Maintain Expertise: Build and maintain expertise in materials, processes, equipment that is used in the labs.
  • Manage Lab Supply Orders & Inventories: Learn to manage orders and inventories of equipment, tools, materials & supplies in the Spunbond and the Meltblown Nonwovens Labs.
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Work with the Lab team & develop and ensure use of SOPs.
  • Troubleshoot Problems: Learn to identify problems, determine possible solutions, and proactively work with the NWI team to solve issues. Request other expert resources if needed.

  • This position requires the development of expertise in the areas of materials, process, and equipment as it relates to nonwovens. With training and experience, candidates will be both collaborative and independent in taking action to support research trials and drive productivity.
    All duties will be performed with attention given to working within university policies and regulations, to working with other university departments such as facility maintenance, EH&S and purchasing, and to interacting with client researchers including those from industry, from academia (faculty and students), and from NWI. NWI will provide needed training.

    Qualifications


    Minimum Experience/Education
    High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
    Other Required Qualifications
    • Ability to learn the specific requirements of this position via on-the-job training.
    • Ability to train, lead, and oversee the technical work of staff in a highly technical area.
    • Thorough knowledge of applicable safety standards.
    • Must be self-directed and a self-starter who will direct the technical work of permanent and temporary staff as needed.
    • Able to perform basic algebra, have good written and verbal communication skills, and be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
    • Understands and maintains confidentiality as required.
    • Cross training in our other processing labs is also required.
    • The position will be competent in maintenance using hand and power tools and is self-directed and a self-starter.
    • The ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds frequently, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience in nonwovens and/or paper technologies, extrusion, textiles, fibers or web material handling.
    • Experience with fiber or nonwoven making and testing equipment in a lab &/or production environment.
    • Experience within a manufacturing environment, and willingness to work as a member of a small team in the conduct of lab work.
    • Lab or manufacturing experience/training on one or more of the following:
      • Fiber Spinning
      • Meltblown and spunbond line
      • Hydroentangling unit
      • Carding unit
      • Wet spinning unit
      • Needle loom
      • Use of hand tools

    Note that candidates will be provided the training they need.
    Required License or Certification
    • Forklift license required within first 90 days of hire.
    • A valid driver’s license is required by date of hire with a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days.
