The University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics (UI Health) is seeking a Process Improvement & Discovery Project Manager to join our team of dedicated and highly skilled professionals. The Process Improvement & Discovery Project Manager provides expertise to support process improvement endeavors throughout the organization through identifying, facilitating, assisting in implementation and leading in the constant improvement approach. Under the general direction of the Senior Director and in consultation with Senior Risk Managers, leads assigned projects, utilizes process improvement skills to advance the organizational priorities identified through Root Cause Analysis and other identified areas of operational improvement and hospital initiatives throughout the organization. This position is also responsible for coordinating the University’s medical malpractice and general discovery responses under the direction of the Senior Director and in consultation with assigned Senior Risk Managers. Both process improvement work and discovery coordination are maintained using project management, quality and risk principles.



  • Executes Process Improvement project plan and provides daily support for moving the project forward on large process improvement initiatives with support from the Senior Director and in consultation with the assigned Senior Risk Manager leader.
  • In partnership with Process Improvement team members, facilitates the use of standard process improvement tools.
  • Collaborates with the assigned Senior Risk Manager as needed to develop meeting agendas and project materials for coordination of Process Improvement meetings.
  • Assists with project management needs of key Safety Committee Sub-Committees, especially those focused on The Joint Commission National Patient safety goals.
  • Accurately captures and documents key discussions, decisions, and action items, utilizing project management tools to ensure consistency.
  • May on occasion in conjunction with the assigned Senior Risk Manager, lead and facilitate project meetings, employing basic facilitation skills (e.g. encouraging participation, using process checks, etc.).
  • Utilizes data visualizations and other process improvement tools to facilitate progress on and identify solutions for process improvement initiatives.
  • Maintains process improvement initiatives in a tracking data base to identify and coordinate follow-up through the life cycle of the project.
  • Identifies data collection and analysis needs as appropriate when relevant data does not exist electronically.
  • Promotes a culture of continuous improvement within the Process Improvement team and when engaged with different teams throughout the organization.
  • Updates the UI Health Risk Management & Patient Safety website on a regular basis.
  • Serves as Project Manager for annually required Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Under the direction of the Senior Director and with consultation from the assigned Senior Risk Manager, assists in gathering documents for discovery production in response to UI Health medical malpractice and general liability claims and lawsuits.
  • Coordinates meetings with UI Health staff, University Claims staff and external counsel to address UI Health legal matters related to filed claims and lawsuits.
  • Develops and maintains a database of requested discovery production to ensure timely responses to UI Health medical malpractice and general liability legal matters.


  • Bachelor's Degree required in healthcare, business or related field required; MBA, MPH, or MHA preferred.
  • Three (3) - five (5) years directly related work experience required, including within a medical practice or hospital setting.
  • CPHQ certification required within six months of hire. CPHRM certification strongly encouraged within two years of hire.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated skill in managing departmental or institutional projects; able to implement standard approach and strategy with team members and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage projects and project key performance indicators.
  • Strong organizational skills in a deadline driven environment; ability to organize time and priorities effectively, asking for direction when appropriate.
  • Exceptional ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects to meet team objectives and deadlines.
  • Self-directed and displays good judgment; transparency and sharing of work and knowledge.
  • Ability to establish and cultivate constructive client relationships; effective at participating in team-building activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication and presentation skills.
  • Judgment and discretion in interacting with providers and management on sensitive and confidential issues.
  • Strong understanding of data management and applications for use within the practice environment including summarizing and presenting data and next steps; knowledge of process mapping and workflow mapping.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, OneNote, PowerPoint) and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain database.
