As operator of high-end digital printing equipment, including large-format and document reproduction machinery, and using basic principles and procedural methods of the printing industry, perform print jobs as a trained operator according to industry and manufacturer specifications. Operate more than one machine simultaneously, as required. Perform daily maintenance and calibration of color and black and white digital presses. Troubleshoot to determine cause and correction of printing artifacts. Participate in formal and informal training sessions to maintain full qualification as an operator on all digital printers. Coordinate all phases of final print requests through bindery operations.

Contact support when machines break down or are not performing according to specifications. Communicate any and all malfunctions to the Support Technician to resolve problems that exist. Work with Support and Repair Technicians to ensure that the digital printing press is performing optimally. Complete service call log documenting date, time and response of the service called.

Identify, clean, scan and store digitized documents (and hardcopy files) according to department procedures and customer requirements. Set job up for efficient production to meet customer requirements. Receive job requests and job tickets and customer files, reviewing job details and setting files appropriately. Use MAC and/or PC based graphics applications, generate quality graphic design for more complex design projects based on customers’ specifications. Typeset, layout, proofread and correct typographical and formatting mistakes. Remains up to date on software and programming changes.

Provide bindery, finishing and addressing services within the TP&DM production center. Bind and finish all ordered products including but not limited to posters, banners, signage, window and floor graphics, booklets, books, pamphlets, circulations, newsletters, forms, letters, notices, engineering drawings, etc. Operate binding and finishing equipment including, but not limited to folders, perfect binder, booklet maker, cutter, creaser, slitter, puncher, stitcher, various binders, padding press and shrink wrap machine. Maintain adequate levels of all materials and supplies associated with assigned job responsibilities at established levels or minimums. Record accurate usage counts and maintain perpetual inventory levels. Assist with inventory counting processes to complete periodic inventory counts and audits as needed. Enter all material transactions including waste to MIS - PrintSmith.

  • May be required to work overtime or alternate shifts.

  • May be required to work in various Imprints Centers on campus.

  • Experience applying basic printing principles and methods to operate large format color and black and white digital presses. Includes experience in process color matching and color correction on press to meet customer requirements. Knowledge of offset printing processes, terminology, and applications.

  • Knowledge of paper stock, paper weights, paper finishes, alternate printing substrates, bindery, finishing types and options as they apply to print jobs and production equipment. Ability to order appropriate paper supplies for productive equipment.
    Experience operating various addressing, bindery and finishing equipment to produce quality finished product.

  • Ability to perform data entry of job specifications, production information and inventory to printer systems in PrintSmith or Management Information System (MIS).
    Experience prioritizing multiple printing projects to meet deadlines simultaneously. Knowledge of basic math skills to calculate and estimate production time (machine run time) and the cost of print jobs.

  • Ability to efficiently use general computer programs such as, but not limited to: Adobe Creative Suite, BLINK, MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook (electronic mail), Acrobat, and Internet applications. Ability to use online systems for timekeeping, web-to-print applications. Knowledge of business equipment such as, but not limited to: scanners, copiers, telephone, fax machine, laser printer, and calculator.

  • Experience conducting basic maintenance and calibrations of color and black & white digital presses according to manufacturer recommendations.
    Experience critically examining produced items for quality print, proper order, edge alignment and binding quality.

  • Knowledge of problem solving techniques that support best practices in the design, set-up, execution, and production of printing jobs.

  • Experience in design, layout and image manipulation and creation using various graphics applications. Experience working with various image formats such as, but not limited to TIFF, JPEG, PDF and EPS.

  • Experience altering layouts, fonts, photographs, graphic images and other file properties in their native formats to correct, reposition or otherwise prepare them for print proofs or electronic submissions.

  • Effective interpersonal and verbal communication skill with the ability to clearly and concisely communicate information to internal and external customers in person, on the phone, and email.

  • Proven ability to operate registers, credit card transaction devices and other POS devices.
    Ability to regularly lift paper boxes and paper stacks to and from hand trucks, carts, and worktables.

  • Strong customer service background in the printing/graphics industry with skills to consult customers in various capacities such as graphic designer, time estimation, technical advisor in print and electronic layout, document capture and large format consultant.

  • Knowledge of computer file directories and management.

  • Experience training staff in equipment operation, setup, and safety.

  • Ability to model and advocate the UCSD Principles of Community.

  • DMV, & DOJ/FBI background checks and clearances required prior to employment.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver License.

  • Must participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.

  • Must be Digital Press Operator qualified annually.


Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $33,900 - $70,052 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $16.24 - $33.55

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
