Job Summary

While keeping the mission of the ISU Laboratory Schools and the College of Education at the center of all decisions regarding educational, co-curricular, and collaborative efforts, the principal serves as the instructional leader of Thomas Metcalf School by providing opportunities in professional and program development, research activities, and teacher education experiences. The principal also has fiscal oversight of the Thomas Metcalf budget.

The principal leads collaboration between Metcalf, University High School, the College of Education, and other programs within Illinois State University and serves as a key communicator with faculty associates and staff, campus, community, and parental leaders. Additionally, the principal serves in an advisory role on several key committees.

The principal is responsible for making hiring recommendations to the Director and supervising and evaluating faculty and staff at Thomas Metcalf School, representing the school through visits and receiving visitors, working with the ISU Foundation in fundraising, helping plan and oversee building renovation projects and updates, working with the technology leadership team on technology purchases. The principal leads 504 planning and collaborates with Heart of Illinois Low Incidence Association (HILIA) leadership.


Salary Rate / Pay Rate

Pay is commensurate with qualifications and experience, combined with an excellent benefits package


Required Qualifications

1. State of Illinois Professional Educator License with Principal Endorsement prior to October 1, 2024.
2. Background in curriculum development, research and/or preparation of future educators.
3. A minimum of four years of demonstrated success in teaching at the K-12 level.
4. A minimum of two years of demonstrated success in K-12 leadership as principal, assistant principal, dean of students, special education director or equivalent.
5. At least 2 years of the above teaching or leadership experience that is at the elementary or middle school level.


Preferred Qualifications

1. An earned doctorate or actively enrolled in a doctoral program in Education Administration or Curriculum and Instruction.
2. Teaching or leadership experience at both the elementary and middle school level.


Work Hours

Generally Monday - Friday, school hours with occasional weekend and evening hours as business needs dictate


Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:
1. Remain at a workstation for extended periods
2. Move about in various locations on and off campus as needed to complete day-to-day work
3. Effectively communicate on a daily basis
