Description of Work Unit
The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DOD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary
A Principal Investigator position is available at the main campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO.
One or more Principal Investigator (PI) positions are available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at Colorado State University (CSU) to manage and implement CEMML’s existing projects and promote continued program development. PI responsibilities include overseeing multiple on-campus and off-campus personnel and a variety of complex projects throughout the United States and U.S. Territories. This position performs and directs substantive, project-oriented tasks, and is responsible for securing program/project funding; prepares proposals/budgets; and assumes fiscal and administrative responsibility for assigned projects, resources, and staff.
Responsibilities include:
  • Supervises multiple on-campus and off-campus personnel, including Research Associates, Professional/Individual Contributors, Hourly, and Students employees
  • Manages technical, support, research, and/or professional staff members at project and program levels.
  • Ensures program-level compliance with internal and external rules/policies.
  • Is responsible for oversight and management of Cooperative Agreements and program initiatives.
  • Is responsible for development, implement, and monitor project and organizational budgets.
  • Identifies staffing/resource requirements and needs.
  • Recruits and hires staff; prepares position descriptions and determines job qualifications; evaluates, interviews and participates in candidate selection.
  • Cultivates new clients and new projects with existing clients.
  • Adapts communication to different audiences.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in environmental science, natural resource management, anthropology, archaeology, cultural resources management, applied geospatial studies, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of post-graduate professional experience managing natural and/or cultural resource compliance projects and programs.
  • Applicable experience working with federal environmental regulations and legislation, including the National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Water Act, National Historic Preservation Act and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
  • Experience developing/writing new policies, guidelines, and management recommendations.
  • Supervisory experience at the departmental or organizational level.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • PhD in environmental science, natural resource management, anthropology, archaeology, cultural resources management, applied geospatial studies, or related field.
  • Greater than 5-years of post-graduate professional experience managing natural and/or cultural resource compliance projects and programs
  • Experience developing, implementing, and ensuring adherence to Standard Operating Procedures that meet organizational requirements.
  • Experience working in an academic settings with faculty, researchers, and university support offices.
  • Experience working with the Department of Defense or other federal land-managing agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability of working collaboratively and productively in multidisciplinary environments with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of project management principles, including management of budget and personnel, and stakeholder relations, and PMP certification or equivalent strongly desired.
  • Extensive management and leadership experience at department or organizational levels.
  • Experience collating, tracking, reviewing, and commenting on data and reports from contractors and/or subordinates to ensure that all documentation and deliverables are complete and comply with professional/contractual standards.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues and clients, as demonstrated by effective coordination and execution of multiple projects and staff simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated track-record of winning and administering grants, cooperative agreements, and/or contracts.
  • Must have strong organizational skills.
  • Strong written communication skills are essential.
  • Experience with public speaking and formal presentations.

  • Functions as a vocal and visible champion responsible for promoting CEMML program capabilities and qualifications to internal and external offices, partners, sponsors, clients, and collaborators.
