We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine; strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.

Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.

The Office of Principal Gifts provides leadership to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors capable of gifts of $5 million or greater. The Office of Principal Gifts staff works across Johns Hopkins University and Medicine to support the principal gifts strategy of the schools and departments; directly manages a select group of donors; and works closely with the university president and provost, as well as volunteer leaders.

Johns Hopkins seeks a Principal Gifts Proposals Manager who serves as strategist and senior writer who will work collaboratively across the University and Medicine as a key partner in articulating Johns Hopkins priorities, high-level strategic planning, and initiatives that result in new principal level proposals.

The Proposals Manager is an accomplished writer who convenes and leads stakeholders including institutional leaders, faculty, and development offices in the writing, editing, project management, and research for proposals and special development projects. The Proposals Manger also leads creative efforts for teams throughout the Office of Philanthropic Partnerships and coordinates design and visuals for proposals in partnership with the Visual Development Specialist. They also write, edit, and conduct research for leadership briefings for the president, provost, senior vice president, Board of Trustees, and other university leadership.

This position is responsible for the creative production of viable proposals and development projects using a variety of contemporary communication strategies and methods. Experience in the use of data visualization, artificial intelligence-assisted writing and research platforms, and other communications tools will expand the capacity of our team to meet the expectations of an increasing volume of proposals and roster of principal gift donors.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Proposal Manager, Strategist, and Senior Writer (60%)

  • Involving key stakeholders, manages the research, development, writing, and editing of written and visual materials for large-scale development projects and proposals.
  • Performs significant qualitative and quantitative review data and other materials provided by development offices, faculty, and other partners for inclusion in proposals
    • Determines overarching themes and best methods for visual and written representation of the most relevant elements within large amounts of information and data.
  • Establishes, facilitates, and leads working groups of key stakeholders for each proposal and maintains all support materials to equip members in achieving their responsibilities for a proposal in an efficient and timely matter.
  • Compilation and development of data visualization including budgets, and responsibility for management of graphics and other visuals developed by a team of creative professionals and/or partners within the institution.
  • Performs significant independent research for the background materials, peer review, and other aspects of the foundation of knowledge necessary for the development of large-scale projects.
  • Oversees and executes the Office of the Provost’s proposal review process.

Manager of Development Projects (20%)

  • Leads or supports large-scale development priority projects for the entire Office of Philanthropic Partnerships, including the offices of Leadership Programs, the Strategic Initiatives team, Innovation Initiatives & Corporate Relations, and Foundation Relations.
  • Provides consultation on strategic themes, creative elements, data, and research for special projects.

Briefings and Correspondence Writer and Editor (20%)

  • Serves as a member of the Briefings Team and Correspondence Team as a researcher, writer, and editor of briefings for the president, provost and other university officials for meetings and events, as well as development correspondence for the president and other university leadership, by working collaboratively with development offices across the institution.
  • Partners with the Briefings and Correspondence Managers to edit team member briefings materials prior to final review; edit correspondence documents; as well as develop and implement new briefing processes and oversee communication to appropriate Development and Alumni Relations staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates are required to submit 2-3 writing samples along with resume and cover letter.

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing and communications skills; ability to handle multiple tasks and problem solve, as well as adapt to changing priorities; and the ability to organize large amounts of information and write concisely and accurately within a limited time frame.
  • Knowledge of style manuals, such as Chicago and Associated Press.
  • Familiarity with fundraising, grant writing, or institutional advancement and development is preferred.
  • Experience in writing for higher education and/or public health is desirable.
  • Experience in academic or large nonprofit institutions, preferably in the advancement, development, or donor relations environments
  • Demonstrated discretion and diplomacy in interacting with leaders and faculty members in higher education, or similar organization.
  • Skill with visual presentation platforms including Adobe, Canva or similar
  • Skill with data visualization and data analysis
  • Skill with artificial-intelligence assisted writing, researching, and compiling methods and platforms
