Position Overview

Principal Analysts Senior in Analytics, Institutional Research & Effectiveness (AIRE) support university units in developing analytical and statistical solutions to provide key insights to leaders. It is critical that Sr. Principal Analysts have a deep understanding of data related to the specific business line(s) or data domains they support. Sr. Principal Analysts must lead projects using agile project management methodology of design and development, while staying mindful of deadlines. They lead requirements gathering discussions and coordinate data modeling efforts with end users and the technical developers. Sr. Principal Analysts serve as a mentor to junior staff within the department and may supervise students and/or staff.


Job Description

50% - Data Visualization & Report Development & Analysis

  • Serves as a Subject Matter Expert in their assigned data domains.
  • Plans, develops, conducts, analyzes, communicates, and documents qualitative studies across a spectrum of topics (e.g. comparative metrics, enrollment trends, salary equity studies, etc.).
  • Provides leadership in the development of and implementation of optimum analytics solutions for university administration.
  • Leads the design of visually appealing, intuitive data visualizations to communicate data insights.
  • Works with internal and external customers and technical partners to gather, validate, and write requirements for the design of BI solutions (warehouse tables, subject areas, dashboards, and other analytical tools).
  • Creates and maintains documentation for projects and processes.
  • Prepares official data submissions for the federal government, the Kansas Board of Regents, contracted partners, and other external data collections in collaboration with the AIRE Official Reporting team and other university offices.

15% - Project Management
  • Leads cross-functional project teams using agile project management methodology and works with data stewards, data scientists, data management team members, and other SMEs to develop analytical solutions that support the needs of the university.
  • Develops and implements project plans, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Provides regular project status updates and communicates progress, risks, and issues to relevant stakeholders.

15% - Dashboard/Report Maintenance & Quality Assurance
  • Supports and improves existing reports and dashboards, aligning with business and data governance practices.
  • Searches for inconsistent or incorrect data and works with relevant partners to develop data cleansing strategies.
  • Works with data SMEs to develop quality assurance protocols.
  • Tests and verifies that modeled data meets quality standards.
  • Assists with the creation of programs to reconcile warehouse data to source systems.
15% - Data Leadership & Outreach
  • Serves as a mentor to junior staff within the department.
  • Coaches customers on the use of analytics tools.
  • Develops end user training materials.
  • Stays current with BI tool capabilities and investigates implementation of new functionalities.
  • Monitors and responds to customer service tickets as needed, tracks their progress, and ensures timely resolution.
  • Provides staff support and/or serves as a member on university committees.
5% - Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of relevant experience; or Master’s degree and three (3) years of relevant experience
  • Six (6) years experience analyzing and/or presenting data to inform decision-making (report generation, dashboard development, etc.).
  • Four (4) years project management and organizational skills.
  • Four (4) years experience using data visualization tools such as Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) or Tableau.
  • Four (4) years experience using programming languages supporting data analytics, such as SAS, SQL, or R.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills as demonstrated in application materials.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Social Sciences, or closely related field.
  • Five (5) years professional experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working in an agile team environment as demonstrated by application materials.
  • Experience working with relational databases such as Oracle.
  • Two (2) years experience with one or more data content areas (Finance, HR, Research Administration, or Academic data). Individual should show significant expertise in a specified content area, or intermediate expertise in a broad set of content areas.
