Title Preceptor in Psychology
School Faculty of Arts and Sciences
Department/Area Psychology
Position Description
The Department of Psychology at Harvard University welcomes applications for a Preceptor in Psychology.  The successful candidate will have, above all, demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduates.

Working under the direction of the Director and Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies, the Preceptor will provide pedagogical and administrative support for the Department’s undergraduate thesis program.  Core responsibilities of the position include supporting thesis students in all stages of their research, working with faculty, graduate student, and postdoc research advisors to support thesis writers, and serving as instructor for the junior and senior thesis tutorial courses. The thesis tutorial courses are unique in that they do not cover particular content areas but rather provide support work for thesis writers including instruction on skills and techniques central to understanding and conducting psychological research (e.g., IRB submission; programming an online study) and community building. The Preceptor will manage all administrative elements of the thesis process in coordination with the Undergraduate Office, including updating materials and website content, processing and reviewing thesis applications and grade submissions, communicating program guidelines and deadlines, and suggesting ideas to support the thesis program over time.

More generally, the Preceptor will serve as research advisor to all undergraduates interested in research in psychology more broadly. This will include advising students on identifying research interests, joining labs, preparing to write a thesis, applying to graduate school in psychology, etc. The Preceptor will assist the Undergraduate Office with administration of research-related activities and events for undergraduates (e.g., reviewing psychology-related student grant applications, participating in advising events, planning milestone celebrations for thesis students) as well as assisting with other program needs that may arise.

Additionally, the Preceptor will have the opportunity to develop a small, skills-based seminar to be offered once per year in an area of expertise and interest.

This is a full-time position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022.  The initial appointment is for three years, with the second and third year contingent upon a successful performance review after the first year, followed by a term of up to five years, contingent upon performance, enrollments, curricular need, position availability, and authorization of the divisional dean.
Complete applications, including letters of reference, will be reviewed starting March 15, 2022.  Applications submitted after this deadline will only be considered if positions remain open after an initial round.
Basic Qualifications
Candidates are required to have a PhD or an equivalent terminal degree in Psychology or very closely related field (e.g., Cognitive Science, Statistics, EdD in Human Development) by the expected start date.  Demonstrated experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.
Additional Qualifications
Expertise in experimental psychology. Evidence of teaching and mentoring excellence. A high level of competence and a demanding combination of academic, administrative, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.  Experience designing discussion sections or courses strongly preferred.
