FULL-TIME/PERMANENT PRAIRIE ECOLOGIST FISH & WILDLIFE RESEARCH SCIENTIST 1 Wildlife Science Program Olympia, Washington – Thurston County Generate new knowledge and the scientific analyses needed to address ongoing and emergent conservation issues. This is an opportunity to use your research experience to provide original quantitative analyses and study designs needed to understand wildlife population dynamics and trends, the effectiveness of conservation actions, and provide insights into the complex interactions among species. You are excited to, develop scientifically defensible study designs needed to answer important management questions and evaluate the potential outcomes of various management actions. You will also be expected to help managers understand the range of potential outcomes of various management actions/decisions Duties: Our Prairie Ecologist Designs and implements research studies to answer questions of relevance to wildlife management and conservation: Work with policy makers, other Programs/Divisions, Regional staff, and external partners to define management questions that can be addressed by research Identify and implement appropriate research design (including quantitative analyses) Coordinate activities with appropriate Agency and partner organizations Write proposals and soliciting external funding as appropriate Conduct or supervise those conducting research activities (recruit and hire appropriate staff when necessary) Design robust and efficient monitoring schemes that assess populations of rare prairie associated species and prairie habitat quality that are ideally linked to evaluating the effectiveness of management activities: Review and evaluate existing field and analytical methods for applicability and adapt, if possible, existing methods to address relevant questions. If necessary, develop new monitoring methods, including survey design, implementation strategies, protocols, and statistical analyses. Train field biologists on implementation of monitoring methods and track data quality. Manage data and analyze data collected and provide timely results summaries. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: Most work will be in an office setting but there will be periods when remote field work will be conducted under varying environmental conditions including uneven and steep terrain, cold, hot, and wet weather conditions. Work will include wild animal handling Schedule: Standard work hours are Monday – Friday, 40hrs/week Field work can result in irregular hours and weekend work Travel Requirements: Regular travel statewide and outside the state for meetings and field work. Tools and Equipment: Dependent on project but likely to include: 4-WD trucks Work in inclement weather over difficult terrain Ability to walk, bend, stoop and carry up to 40 lbs Ability to transport equipment and gear Customer Interactions: Lay and professional presentations and meetings and occasionally respond to requests for information from the public and elected officials
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis. A Ph.D. degree in ecology/wildlife/zoology and/or biostatistics OR A Master's degree in ecology/wildlife/zoology or biostatistics with emphasis on animal population biology, or closely allied field and two years of professional experience designing ecological studies in population biology or population management or designing and conducting wildlife studies/surveys. Must also have published (or in-press) two research articles in the refereed literature as a senior author. PLUS Advanced statistics and data analysis with a strong understanding of statistical fundamentals in the areas of population estimation, population dynamics, and the influence of habitat on all the above Strong foundation in research, survey, and sampling design Programming skills (e.g., R, SAS, JAGS, WinBUGS, etc.) An understanding of best practices in data management Advanced knowledge in a recognized area of animal ecology Experience leading large research projects with multiple partners Experience conducting wildlife research in the field Skilled in advising resource managers and addressing management questions in an effective diplomatic manner PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A Doctoral degree in wildlife science, biology, zoology, or in biostatistics with emphasis on animal population biology, or closely allied field. Research on invertebrates with an emphasis on grassland environments Experience supervising staff Personal experience with developing and executing wildlife research studies, including soliciting funding from external sources, managing contracts and budgets, hiring and supervision of field personnel, designing data collection schemes, analyzing data, and reporting results. Knowledge and experience in the use of specialized statistical approaches commonly used in wildlife population studies, including parameter estimation methods, such as line transect/distance, mark-recapture, occupancy modelling, habitat suitability analyses, etc. Supplemental Information Please note: Failure to follow the instructions below may lead to disqualification.
