UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Transportation Services and Safety. Lastly, there is the Campus Energy, Utilities & Operations group. Supporting these groups, as well as the separate Emergency Management team, are the Business Intelligence & Information Technology group and the Finance & Administration group.

Campus Engineering, Utilities &Operations has an outstanding opportunity for a Power Plant Operating Engineer 2 to operate and maintain multiple high-pressure superheated boilers and other power plant equipment in a complex steam, power, and chilled water generating facility. Ensure uninterrupted generation of steam, electrical power, and chilled water to a large campus.

Operate and monitor complex electrical power distribution system. Operate and maintain multiple diesel-power generators which provide immediate emergency power to a medical center and other life-safety and critical emergency power loads on campus. Under general supervision, independently operate and maintain multiple high-pressure superheated boilers. Assist higher level Power Plant Operating Engineers with the overall operation of the power plant facility and campus power distribution system. Assist with the training of assigned personnel in the operation of equipment and systems within the facility.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate multiple high-pressure superheated boilers (425 psi or greater) and other lower-pressure boilers (185 psi), up to an individual boiler capacity of 250,000 pounds or more per hour, and all auxiliary equipment
• Operate one or more 5000kW turbine generators and multiple emergency diesel power generators to ensure life safety and maintain critical power loads on the campus
• Operate and monitor electrical power distribution systems for the campus: visually monitor power distribution, isolate disruptions, and use manual and computerized controls to adjust and reconfigure power distribution
• Operate Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS); ensure that other assigned facility equipment is operating within CEMS-monitored parameters
• Operate multiple (2000 ton or greater) chilled water production equipment and associated chilled water distribution systems
• Operate water treatment and other auxiliary and ancillary power plant equipment and associated distribution systems.
• Perform water treatment testing and chemical additions
• Assist with training of assigned personnel regarding operation of equipment and systems within the facility
• Maintain operation of assigned equipment while on shift within the parameters set forth by the facility's EPA Air Operating Permit
• Prepare abnormal operations reports and other required reports, perform data logging, and maintain shift operations log
• Monitor and inspect operation of equipment and systems within the power plant; identify and correct deficiencies as required
• Perform the duties of a Power Plant Operating Engineer I
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements include:

• Applicable Steam Engineer License required by local municipality, if any; and four years’ experience in operation and maintenance of boilers and related systems
• Must include one year of experience with operation of high-pressure superheated boilers, turbine generators, and/or diesel generators, feedwater systems, oil and natural gas fuel systems, air emissions monitoring equipment, and related auxiliary systems OR equivalent education/experience.

Additional Requirements include:

• Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
• Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

• Experience in using email communication and navigating in the Windows PC environment
