Power Plant Maintenance Mechanic - Georgetown University Planning & Facilities Management

Power Plant Maintenance Mechanic is responsible to upkeep and maintain all equipment in operational ready condition to ensure safe, interruption-free utility service.  This person performs scheduled maintenance, repairs, and inspections on mechanical equipment such as high-pressure boilers, centrifugal chillers, industrial pumps, water treatment systems, cooling towers, industrial compressors, and other auxiliary equipment in the central plant.  This equipment and these systems are critical in the production and distribution of steam and chilled water to the campus and hospital.  In addition, this person:

  • Perform scheduled maintenance, inspections, and adjustments to a state of the art, coal fired, high pressure, Fluidized Bed Steam Boiler, three gas/oil fired high-pressure steam boilers, two steam driven three thousand-ton chillers, four electric driven chillers, an emergency generator, and a thermal storage system. 
  • Perform Installations, inspections, adjustments, scheduled maintenance, and refurbishing of equipment relative to the operation of these major pieces of equipment. 
  • Perform scheduled inspections, alignments and rebuilds of high-pressure pumps, turbines, chillers, compressors, pressure blowers, valves, and coal and ash handling equipment; fans and cooling towers.
  • Replaces old equipment when directed with new equipment when repair is no longer feasible.
  • Assists other crafts as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required to maintain a safe and reliable plant operation.

This position reports to Maintenance Supervisor along with Electronic technician and two Control Specialists.

Qualifications

  • HS or GED.
  • Four years of related experience in the maintenance, rebuilding, and repairing of mechanical equipment, or the equivalent combination of training and experience is required due to the complexity of the plant systems.
  • Understand basic electrical, piping, and machining principles and practices.
  • Ability to diagnose a system problem versus a component problem.
