Job Description

The TAMU Poultry Science Department invites applications for a non-tenure track Research Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in the broad area of Poultry Management and Health.   The appointment will be split between research (65%) and extension (35%).  The selected candidate may conduct research in commercial and backyard or small flock poultry management, reportable diseases, epidemiology, virology, and vaccination.  The incumbent will work with the poultry industry, small or alternative producers, backyard flock owners, and government agencies.

Texas ranks 5th in poultry meat and egg production nationally.   On a cash receipts basis, poultry and eggs are the state’s second-largest agricultural commodity.  The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Poultry Science at Texas A&M University serves a broad client base from the commercial poultry industry to backyard chicken hobbyists. Information regarding flock and bird health is the most frequent request for our Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service poultry specialists. A faculty member proficient in general poultry management and health issues, emerging and exotic diseases, biosecurity education, and cross-discipline research is a critical need for our department.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a nationally recognized extension and research program in one or more poultry management and health areas.
  • Expected to provide state and regional leadership in these topic areas through interactions with industry personnel and/or small flock owners, governmental agencies, county-based extension agents, and extension specialists.
  • Establish a nationally recognized, extramurally funded extension-based research program.
  • Graduate student mentoring to obtain these extension-based research goals is essential.
  • Expected to effectively communicate pertinent scientific knowledge to poultry industry stakeholders, regulatory officials, and other related clientele.
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Participate in national and regional professional organizations actively.
  • Departmental, college, and university committee service will be expected.
  • Other duties as required.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Earned Ph.D. or equivalent degree, including a D.V.M., from an accredited institution in Poultry Science, Animal Science, Veterinary Microbiology, Epidemiology, or closely related disciplines by the expected position start date.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Documented evidence of individual and/or collaborative extension and research efforts in poultry management and health resulting in extramural grants, peer-reviewed research and extension publications, popular press articles, and oral presentations at scientific meetings and extension events.

Required special knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Excellent written, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Application Instructions:

Interested candidates must submit:

  • Statement of research,
  • Statement of extension,
  • Current curriculum vitae,
  • Names and contact information of three references.

Deadlines:

  • Review of applications will begin November 15, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled.

All positions are security-sensitive. Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation, and employment is contingent upon the institution’s verification of credentials and/or other information required by the institution’s procedures, including the completion of the criminal history check.
