Principal Investigator, Rameshwar Patil, PhD, is looking for a Postdoctoral Scientist to join the team!

The focus of the Patil Laboratory is on delivering imaging agents and therapeutic drugs across the blood-brain barrier to image and treat brain tumors and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Currently, the Patil Lab is working on boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT)—in particular, tumor-targeted delivery of Boron-10 (10B)-rich molecules for the treatment of high-grade glioma. The Patil Lab is also studying the effect of breathable particulate matter (PM) in ambient air on Alzheimer’s disease progression.

As a Postdoctoral Scientist, you will work independently but in close cooperation and consultation with the Principal Investigator and other Research Scientists in the Department of Neurosurgery. You will perform routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout training period.  This position is not responsible for generating grant funds. 


Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Perform synthesis and characterization of polymeric nanoconjugates. 
  • Cell culture of various cancer cell lines. Treatment of these cell cultures with various nanoparticle formulations to assess for uptake and toxicity.
  • In vivo experiments to test various nanoparticle formulations using the appropriate cancer mouse model. Duties include animal handling, nanoparticle injection (iV or IP), euthanasia, tissue harvesting and cutting using cryostat, and tissue histology. 
  • Protein extraction from cell cultures and animal tissues for Western Blot Analysis and other assays. 
  • Assist in placing order of reagents and consumables related to his/her work.
  • Will participate in preparation of grant proposals, submissions, publications and presentations.
  • Study the imaging and therapeutic properties and biological mechanisms of new nanodrugs, which will be optimized for clinical efficacy to treat primary and metastatic brain tumors.  
  • May develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols.  
  • Analyzes and interprets data.  
  • May assist in preparation of grant proposals.  
  • Will keep appropriate experimental records and documentation and analyze the results with the Principal Investigator.
  • Operates and maintains equipment and instruments.

  • Doctorate (MD, PhD, VMD, or DDS) in area directly related to field of research specialization, required.
  • PhD degree in Chemistry or Pharmacology is highly preferred.
  • Experience in chemical synthesis, cancer biology, and preclinical tumor treatment using various animal model.
  • Acquires thorough technical and theoretical knowledge of research projects and objectives during one to five (1-5) year post-doctoral appointment.
  • Works independently on research projects designed by a mentor (typically the PI) within area of specialization, nanomedicine.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to perform experimental protocols and procedures, including detailed data collection, and analysis, and operation and maintenance of specialized equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and maintenance of specialized equipment.
  • Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint).  
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
