Working independently but in close cooperation and in consultation with the Principal Investigator and other Research Scientists, you will perform routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout training period. May develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols, analyze and interpret data, and assist in preparation of grant proposals. This position is not responsible for generating grant funds. 

The Postdoctoral Scientist will be responsible to develop a preclinical model to provide compelling evidence that a an engineered synthetic biotic (e.g., Lactobacillus) can produce human guanylin, a gut hormone that could improve Gastrointestinal function in patients with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) alone or with the CF potentiators/correctors. The applicant is expected to have publications in the field of microbiology/microbiome of the gut and experience culturing and engineering biotic bugs. 


Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • May assist in preparation of grant proposals, but is not responsible for generating grant funds.
  • May participate in publications and presentations as author or co-author.
  • Designs and performs experiments. Will keep appropriate experimental records and documentation and analyze the results with the Principal Investigator.
  • May develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols. 
  • Analyzes, interprets, summarizes and compiles data.  
  • Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout training period.
  • Operates and maintains equipment and instruments.

Education:
  • Doctorate (MD, PhD, VMD, or DDS) in area directly related to field of research specialization, required.


Experience and Skillset:
  • The candidate needs to have expertise to study human microbiome and nutrition aspects in managing health related issues. 
  • Expertise in Bacterial culture (specialize in anerobic gut bacteria)/Aseptic techniques, enumeration, characterization, identification, and stimulated in-vitro digestion model.
  • Experience in Molecular biology techniques: DNA/RNA isolation, quantification, qPCR, sequencing data analysis, Cloning, Gel Electrophoresis, ELISA.
  • Experience in Data analysis: Metabolomics (SIMCA), SPSS, Graph pad, Data analysis using R.
  • Experience in Animal handling techniques: oral gavage, blood collection, animal dissection. 
  • Experience with Instrumentation: Plate reader, Fluorescence microscope, anaerobic chamber, freeze dryer, PCR. 
  • Works independently on research projects designed by a mentor (typically the PI) within area of specialization.
  • Acquires thorough technical and theoretical knowledge of research project and objectives during one to five (1-5) year post-doctoral appointment.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to perform experimental protocols and procedures, including detailed data collection, and analysis, and operation and maintenance of specialized equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and maintenance of specialized equipment.
