Position description
The Department of ESPM:Ecosystem Sciences Division at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for multiple Postdoc Employee positions to research Ecological and Social Dimensions of California Wolf Recovery.
The Middleton and Brashares groups at UC Berkeley seek 2-3 highly motivated postdoctoral scholars to join a partnership between UC Berkeley and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. These positions will co-lead efforts to design and implement studies of California's recovering wolf population and its management. Ecological research will include wolf movement, diet, and predation patterns. Social dimensions research will include evaluation of conflict reduction and compensation programs.
Responsibilities:
Postdoctoral researchers will co-lead and manage field teams to address both ecological and social dimensions of wolf management in California. They will be responsible for handling and maintaining large and sensitive datasets, and leading engagement with stakeholders and partners.
Postdoctoral researchers focusing on ecological dimensions will be expected to lead the collection, organization, analysis, outreach and publication of research focused on wolf home range and habitat usage, diet and prey dynamics, and predator and prey habitat suitability under various management scenarios. Executing these responsibilities will require collection and analysis of data from GPS collars, camera traps, and other sources.
Postdoctoral researchers focusing on social dimensions will be expected to lead the collection, organization, analysis, outreach and publication of research focused on temporal, spatial and socioecological aspects of livestock-wolf interactions, including depredation events. These positions will also lead stakeholder engagement to support and evaluate conflict reduction and compensation programs. Executing these responsibilities will require collection and analysis of diverse sets of data including producer surveys, depredation histories, and economic outcomes, and will rely also on ecological data (e.g., wolf locations).
