Position Description:

Dr. Ryan Smith’s laboratory is soliciting applications for a Post-doctoral Scholar position within the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Experimental Therapeutics (PSET). The project will focus on spatial and temporal control of gene expression in neuronal tissues to identify and validate new drug targets. The University of Iowa has an outstanding state-of-the-art genomics core facility, newly established Iowa Neuroscience Institute, and Iowa Institute of Human Genetics that will augment the candidate’s research capacity and facilitate data collection, while simultaneously broadening their range of scientific expertise.

It is expected that the postdoctoral scholar will work independently in a collaborative environment, while also assisting with design and execution of the experiments of junior laboratory members. This individual should be self-motivated and will be responsible for design, collection, and analysis of research data, maintaining laboratory notebooks, troubleshooting experiments, and assisting with training graduate students and research assistants. The scholar will also be responsible for preparing manuscripts related to his/her work, and strive to obtain their own grants. The University of Iowa provides ample training grant and fellowship opportunities for qualified applicants.

PSET consists of 20+ faculty members with diverse expertise in pharmacology, PK/PD, pharmacogenomics, experimental pharmaceutics, biomaterials, chemistry and drug delivery. Scientists in the College of Pharmacy work closely with physicians and investigators in the Carver College of Medicine on interdisciplinary projects. Both Colleges have an international reputation for excellence in scholarship and research. In addition to those centers described above, numerous other specialized research centers exist within the university. Academic and research programs in the Carver College of Medicine, College of Public Health, College of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and College of Dentistry provide an outstanding environment for successful collaborations. The University of Iowa is located in Iowa City, a vibrant community located along the Iowa River in southeastern Iowa, offering outstanding schools, quality entertainment and sports, as well as literary, musical, and cultural opportunities. Iowa City is frequently rated highly in various “best-place-to-live” listings.

Applicants should attach a cover letter describing their research interests and unique accomplishments, CV, a concise description of their proposed career goals and a list of three references. The position will remain open until filled.
