Position Description:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in research related to a variety of ultraviolet (UV) observing and experimental astrophysics topics in Prof. Keri Hoadley’s UV Space Lab (HUSL) at the University of Iowa. HUSL works on the cutting edge of creating new UV grating technologies for space-based platforms, designing/implementing novel UV suborbital and space instruments, and is involved in ground and space based science projects across a broad range of scientific topics, including but not limited to: the circumgalactic and intergalactic media, the interstellar medium, planet-forming disks, star formation and massive star characteristics, and binary star mergers/collisions.

The group is seeking a qualified scientist to lead in state-of-the-art technology development programs in place at Iowa. Applicants will obtain foundational training in how to lead their own space-based instrumentation laboratories, including day-to-day planning and management, grant writing practice, and how to build their own, unique research group/program. Applicants with experience working with astronomical instruments and/or technology are preferred, but prior experience is not required. Applicants are encouraged to show strong problem solving skills and creativity.

The applicant will have a leading role in one or more current projects, including but not limited to:

- participating in the design, fabrication, and characterization of novel UV high-dispersion gratings being developed at Iowa;

- gaining hands-on experience with UV detector systems being designed and developed for one of NASA’s first awarded Astrophysics Pioneers SmallSats (Aspera);

- leading the design and optimize new UV high-resolution spectrographs for suborbital- and space-telescopes;

- developing (semi-)independent scientific research programs within the purview of HUSL’s research interests (or continued exploration within the applicant’s own area of expertise).

This will be a 2-year assignment, with the option for an additional year, subject to funding and progress.

Please email a research statement, CV, the names and contact information for 3 references, and list of your publications to Keri Hoadley. If the applicant has any questions about the position or would like more details about specific projects, feel free to contact Prof. Keri Hoadley by email ([email protected] ).

Education Requirement:

  • Ph.D. in Astronomy/Astrophysics, Physics, Planetary Sciences, or a similar field
