The Smallwood lab's focus is on determining the molecular underpinnings responsible for metabolic changes in the host, validating their physiological relevance, identifying therapeutic targets, and testing intervention efficacy. To this end, we employ a multipronged approach utilizing proteomics, transcriptomics, drug screening, basic wet lab techniques for biochemical and immunological assays. Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Heather Smallwood in the Department of Pediatrics at University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). Dr. Smallwood is looking for an outstanding postdoctoral fellow to conduct studies on the role of metabolism in respiratory viral infections including influenza infection and COVID-19. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Smallwood, whose research program focuses on metabolic dysregulation initiated by infection using clinical samples as well as tissue culture and in vivo models for an integrated translational approach. Driven, enthusiastic, and collaborative scientists are welcomed into this group and department. The Smallwood laboratory is located in the new Translational Science Building with open laboratories that foster interdisciplinary interactions. UTHSC faculty members are outstanding with a breath of expertise ranging from pharmacology, cardio-pulmonology, obesity, nutrition, metabolism, and virology. Individuals who thrive in a collaborative environment where techniques, approaches, expertise, and equipment are shared will easily succeed in this collegial setting.
