Job Description

NAU's School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems (SICCS) is hiring a Postodoctoral Scholar to work in the Gurney Lab. This Postdoctoral position will perform research on quantification and analysis of greenhouse gas (GHG) and local air pollution (AQ) emissions at the sub-urban spatial scale (buildings, factories, road segments) in the US. This is an ongoing effort to apply the “Hestia” model (https://hestia.rc.nau.edu ) to multiple urban domains in the U.S., both as a contribution to a complete urban-scale GHG information system development and to build urban-scale policy analytics for urban climate policy. It is closely related to the “Vulcan” estimation system (https://vulcan.rc.nau.edu/ ), which estimates GHG/AQ emissions for the entire US landscape at somewhat coarser spatial resolution. Duties and responsibilities of the position are outlined below.

Research & Publication - 50%

  • Incorporation of existing codified GHG and AQ estimation methods, innovation towards new techniques, analysis of urban GHG/AQ emissions in space and time, comparison studies to alternative or independent methods, interface with atmospheric inverse modelers. Review literature and identify appropriate approaches and develop peer-reviewed publications reflecting research outcomes


Software Development - 25%

  • Existing codebase improvements, additions, expansion, and operation.


Outreach & Communication - 15%

  • Present project results to internal and external parties at regular meetings, seminars, and conferences. Liaisons with other departments, outside collaborators, and others to ensure success of project. Writing of technical publication and reports including peer-reviewed publications.


Co-PI Responsibilities - 10%

  • Postdoc is anticipated to contribute to proposals, ideally as a co-PI.


Other - 5%

  • Supervision of graduate student research
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a field related to position (e.g. Informatics, Geography, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Data Science) from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Numerical analysis experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years R/python programming experience.
  • Geospatial statistical analysis experience.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in use of GIS, preferably in the urban context.
  • Experience working in linux environment with a high-performance computer.
  • Experience working in a team environment with shared workflow (code, data, analysis).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Use of GIS in context of urban data such as building layers, road layers, and other infrastructural or socio-demographic data.
  • Development, authorship, and understanding of medium-size R scripts.
  • Maintenance of organized computational workflow and data environment with documentation.
  • Strong motivation towards urban GHG/AQ quantification and science, policy application.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in team environment with shared workflow.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. In addition, the Fire Safety Report  is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Anticipated salary range is $54,779 to $68,474. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

Post-Doctoral Scholars are hired on a contract basis, renewable each fiscal year for a maximum of 4 renewals (5 years) according to terms of the Arizona Board of Regents' Conditions of Post-Doctoral Service . NAU offers an excellent benefit package to Post-Doctoral Scholars including generous health, dental and vision insurance; 10 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Participation in NAU retirement plans is not available to Post-Doctoral Scholars.
