Postdoctoral Scholar

Updated: 10 days ago
Location: Berkeley, CALIFORNIA

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the BELLA Center team.

In this exciting role, you will perform R&D on laser-plasma-acceleration (LPA), X-ray photon pulse generation and characterization, and nuclear science investigations using LPA-driven particle and radiation sources.  In addition, you will participate in the general programmatic activities at the  BELLA Center, including developing novel plasma, laser, and particle diagnostics and exploring new regimes of laser-driven accelerator physics.

What You Will Do:

  • Design, plan, install, perform, stabilize, and optimize laser-plasma particle acceleration, photon sources, and nuclear physics experiments on the BELLA laser systems.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data.
  • Study and optimize accelerator concepts and applications through modeling and simulations, and implement these concepts at the BELLA Center experimental facilities.
  • Analyze, document, and communicate work in reports and oral presentations, including participation in regular meetings, reviews, and conferences. Publish research in refereed journals.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Physics or Engineering in the field of lasers, accelerators, or plasma physics.
  • Ability to work closely in a diverse team with other scientists, postdocs, graduate students, and technicians.
  • Willingness to work on-site.
  • Interest in lasers, plasmas, particle accelerators, light sources, and accelerator applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with high-power femtosecond laser system operation, preferable with >10TW class titanium-sapphire systems.
  • Basic theoretical understanding of the interactions of intense lasers in plasma, X-rays in matter, and/or charged-particle beams interacting with matter at relativistic energies.
  • Experimental experience with particle acceleration, particle diagnostics, particle-based radiation sources, and/or radiation applications.

Salary:

The monthly salary range for this position is $5,374 - $7,510 and is expected to start at $6,542 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
