East Carolina University is the third largest institution in the 16-member University of North Carolina system with an enrollment of nearly 29,000 students. ECU offers 84 bachelor’s degree programs, 71 master’s degree programs, 12 research doctoral degrees and, 2 first-professional programs (MD, DDS), the Brody School of Medicine, and School of Dental Medicine. ECU is located in Greenville, NC, a diverse and progressive city of approximately 75,000, within two hours driving distance of the Atlantic coast to the east and the Research Triangle area of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill to the west. The College of Engineering and Technology is home to four departments: Engineering, Computer Science, Construction Management, and Technology Systems. The College maintains excellent laboratory facilities for instruction and research. There are many opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaborations with the Brody School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, College of Allied Health Sciences, Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, College of Health and Human Performance and College of Business. The Department offers a BS in Engineering with concentrations in Biomedical Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. There are currently 31 faculty and approximately 550 undergraduate engineering majors. The department has a rapidly growing undergraduate student population, a maturing graduate (MS) program in biomedical engineering in collaboration with the ECU Brody School of Medicine and the ECU School of Dental Medicine and a new MS in mechanical engineering with focus on biomaterials and energy systems

Job Duties

The Postdoctoral Scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in the discipline of computational and experimental biomechanics. Responsibilities include management of all aspects of research related to biomechanical characterization and computer modeling of biological tissue and implants in Vahdati Lab. The research projects include investigation of mechanopathologies of soft and calcified tissue and design of personalized medical devices. Duties include: hypothesis development, literature review, collection of pilot data, report writing, and supervising of undergraduate research students and graduate research students, overseeing data collection procedures, supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, analysis of research hypothesis using descriptive and multivariate statistics, and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.

Approximately 90% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to research.

Approximately 10% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students in the laboratory.

Minimum Education/Experience

English Proficiency
Excellent written and oral communication skills
PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or related field

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Experience with mechanical characterization and imaging of calcified and soft biological tissue.

Knowledge of solid mechanics and finite element modeling or other computer modeling techniques.

Knowledge of Matlab/Python/C++ or other programming language.

Experience with writing grant proposals.

License or Certification Required by the Department
