Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
One or two positions are available to work on NASA-funded research projects using satellite lidar (GEDI, ICESat-2) for mapping and monitoring forest structure and biomass. The position(s) will include algorithm development, large data processing, and cloud computing for wide area product generation. The position(s) will also involve working with users of biomass products e.g. for policy uptake in national reporting, protected area analysis, and/or forest biomass change related to growth, recovery, degradation and deforestation. Candidates with both strong computational backgrounds and strong publication records are particularly sought after. The position(s) will involve working with large international research and policy teams and thus communication skills are also important. Applicants with experience in lidar-based biomass mapping are particularly encouraged. Additionally, applicants from monitories in STEM fields are particularly encouraged. Given long processing times for visas in the US, while international applicants are welcome priority will be given to those who would be eligible to work in the US by June 1, 2024.

Education:
  • PhD in remote sensing or related field.

Experience:
  • Experience with lidar data and/or biomass mapping.
  • Coding in R or pytho.
  • Empirical model development / application.
  • Academic paper writing.
  • Strong communication skills in English (written and spoken).
