Position Overview

The University of Kansas Chemical and Petroleum Engineering department is seeking a well-qualified post-doctoral research associate to support a proprietary research project focused on the development of cost-effective valorization of food/agricultural waste materials into functional dietary ingredients for animal nutrition and bio-based materials. The project has a strong chemical engineering and materials science aspect to it. In addition, suitable candidates should also have a background and interest in food/feed science. A successful candidate will possess excellent experimental and analytical skills. As well as strong oral and written communication abilities and be able to work in a hands-on, collaborative, and energetic environment.


Job Description

60% Research - Design and execution of experiments
These duties include carrying out original research relative to the laboratory mission. Perform experiments on an individual basis that pertain to current research topics in the department. Use analytical techniques including but not limited: High-performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas-Chromatography (GC), Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC). Implement or develop new analytical methods to characterize processed food/agricultural wastes. Develop, implement, plan and conduct innovative engineering experiments for the valorization of wastes, developing standard operating procedures and safety protocols, as well as maintaining and troubleshooting instruments.

20% Reporting - Write reports and papers
Writes technical reports and scientific papers for peer reviewed journals. Additional responsibilities include assisting in the preparation of preparation of grants/contracts and proposals for federal, state and charitable organizations and industrial clients. Communicate scientific results effectively, both written and orally with industrial partners. Author peer-reviewed publications. Assist in writing grant proposals to achieve funding goals for future research.

15% Collaboration - Assist other laboratory members with experiments
Assist the principal investigator to provide experimental and technical supervision of one or more technician, graduate student and/or post-doctoral researchers and/or fellows. Coordinate research meetings with the industrial and academic partners involved in this project.

5% Laboratory protocol - Routine lab management
Ensuring systems are in place for efficient planning of lab supplies, records, and document management as well as experimental protocols and data, and coordination of good lab practices and lab safety.


Position Requirements

  • This position is required to work on-site.
  • This is a one year limited term position.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in chemical engineering, food engineering, materials science or related fields.
  • Demonstrated research experience with an emphasis on chemical and biochemical process development, including, but not limited to, food/agricultural waste valorization.
  • Experience using HPLC, GC and SEC for characterization of bioproducts.
  • Demonstrated bility to perform statistical design of experiments and analyze large data sets using software such as Minitab, Mathematica, Matlab, R or equivalent.
  • NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD conferred at the time of hire.  Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an interim basis not to exceed 6-months. Upon verification of degree the appointment will be extended to its full duration.
